Robert Blake, Professor of Spanish Linguistics and Chair of the Department of Spanish and Classics at UC Davis. He has published on topics dealing with historical phonology, historical and modern syntax, and second-language acquisition. He is co-author of Al corriente, a second-year Spanish textbook, and is the chief academic adviser for Nuevos Destinos CD-ROM. He is active in the field of computer-assisted language instruction and distance learning, especially the RTA project (http://esher/cs.ucdavis.edu).
Dorothy James, Professor of German and Chair of the German Department at Hunter College. She has written books on 19th century German drama and has been active in the movement of proficiency-based language teaching. She was President of the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages (1990), and Editor of the ADFL Bulletin (1990-91). Recently she published a thought-provoking article titled: Bypassing the Traditional Leadership: Who's Minding the Store? (ADFL Spring 1997).
Randall Jones, Professor of German Literature and the former dean of
the College of Humanities at Brigham Young University. He also served as the
founding director of the Humanitites Research Center at BYU. His research and
publications address issues in contemporary german language, computer-assisted
language learnng and research, humanities computing, corpus linguistics and
language testing. He has served on committes for the LSA, MLA, AATG, and CALICO.
Kenneth Lloyd-Jones is a Professor of French at Trinity College,
Timothy Vance is a Professor of Japanese at Connecticut College,
and Krishna Winston is a Professor of German at Wesleyan University.
The three panelists are chairs of their respective departments and members of
the CTW Mellon Excutive Committee. The panel will be moderated by Nina Garrett,
Director of Language Study at Yale, who will be in charge of weaving in questions
from the attending audience.
