Progress Report by: Levana Polate
In connection with the 50th anniversary of the State of Israel I have incorporated into my Hebrew classes the Israel national anthem, "Hatikvah" (The Hope). Written by Naphtali Herz Imber and set to music by Samuel Cohen it became the hymn of the Zionist movement in 1898. My goals are to:
make the Israeli anthem known to students at all levels in terms of cultural and historical events
teach students how to sing it
have students develop listening and pronunciation skills
have students develop comprehension skills
have the students understand special Hebrew poetic structures
The entire text has been typed into software with the following annotations:
I constructed a vocabulary glossary
Melody and lyrics were put into the MacGalt software
Historical background and biography of poet were included
I included background of melody for comparison with music of Smetana
I have read the entire text in normal and slow speed and it has been
I have constructed syntax exercises
A video segment showing relevant historical events has been inserted
This project has been completed. Students in my Hebrew 202 class have learned new aspects, linguistic. cultural and historical, of the Israeli national anthem. Minor technical problem were encountered and are in the process of being solved. Overall, I am satisfied with the project. I am looking forward to more student reactions, especially as regards Hebrew syntax.
