Project Report by: Levana Polate
"A Ship of Immigrants" by Arie Lova Eliav, is based on a true event. This story is written in Hebrew for students at the 302 level and above. My goals are to
make this story accessible to 202 level students,
have students develop listening and pronunciation skills,
have students develop comprehension skills,
have students practice spelling accuracy,
have students practice different grammatical constructions with emphasis on prepositions.
I have constructed a glossary based on the vocabulary of chapter one
I have included a short biography of the author
I have included historical background and cultural elements of the era
I have constructed spelling and grammatical exercises
I have read the entire text in a slow and in a normal speed and it been inserted into MacGalt
I have added still pictures
I have inserted a video segment showing relevant historical events
My student assistant and I experienced the following technical problems.
Poor sound quality, to be improved with more memory
Losing some video and still picture annotations that were later recovered
When we tried to underline the words that were annotated we lost the annotations
The creator of the software was notified. We are waiting for correction of the problem. I have not yet gotten student reactions because of these problems. Overall, I am satisfied with the project. I am looking forward to student reactions especially as regards listening and pronunciation skills as well as student ability and willingness to work with longer stories.
