1. From the Apple Menu, choose Control Panels, then choose the "Sharing Setup" control panel.
2. The window that appears should contain two or three sections. The second one should be labelled "File Sharing." If the button in this section is labelled "Stop", then File Sharing is on. 3. Close the "Sharing Setup" window.
4. From the Apple Menu, choose Control Panels, then choose the "Memory" control panel.
5. The window that appears should contain four sections. The third one should be labelled "Virtual Memory." If the radio button labelled "On" is highlighted, then Virtual Memory. is on. Click on the button labelled "Off" to turn virtual memory off.
6. Close the "Memory" window.
7. From the "Special" menu, choose "Restart" and wait for the computer to boot up again.
First, you'll need to tell the computer which source (CD-ROM, voice, VCR or laserdisc) you'll be recording from.
1. From the Apple Menu, choose Control Panels, then choose the "Monitors & Sound" control panel.
2. In the window that appears, click on the button labelled "Sound".
3. If you will be recording from the external microphone (as opposed to from the CD-ROM drive, the VCR, or the laserdisc player), choose "External microphone" from the menu in the lower right of the "Monitors & Sound" window.
4. Close the "Monitors & Sound" window.
5. Open Videoshop (it's in the Mellon Two hard drive:Mellon Applications:Multimedia folder.)
6. In the menubar, choose "Recording" from the "Windows" menu. This will cause a new menu, called "Recording", to appear in the menubar.
7. From the "Recording" menu, choose "Sound SettingsÉ" A window called "Sound" will appear.
8. In this new window, choose "Source" from the pop-up menu in the upper left corner.
9. From the pop-up menu next to the word "Input:" in this window, choose the proper input. If you are recording using the microphone (to record your voice, for example), choose "Microphone". If you are recording from the computer's CD-ROM drive, choose "Internal CD". If you are recording from the VCR or laserdisc player, choose "AV Connector".
10. For best results, choose "Off while recording" from the pop-up menu labelled "Speaker."
11. Close the "Sound" window.
1. If you are recording from the microphone, you may need to do some experimentation to avoid popping noises from your breath. Don't hold the microphone directly in front of your mouth; try holding it a couple inches lower.
2. To begin recording, click on the black button labeled "REC" in the "Recording" window. While you are recording, this button will be red and labeled "STOP".
3. To end recording, click on the red "STOP" button in the "Recording" window.
1. Your sound movie will now appear as the first item in the window called "Recording folder". To listen to it, double-click on its icon. A new window labeled "Untitled movie x" (where "x" is the number associated with your movie) will open up.
2. This movie window has controllers in it. Click on the play button (marked with a triangle pointing to the right) below the movie to hear it.
3. If you are satisfied with your sound, then move on to the next section to save it. Otherwise, you can edit it by dragging it into the sequencing window. See instructions for video digitizing using videoshop for further guidance here.
The sound movie file we have just made contains both a video track and an audio track, but all we really need is the audio track. This will save space. To eliminate the movie track:
Now we want to save your sound asas a stand-alone movie, so that you can run it on computers that don't have Videoshop. To do this:
1. In the window called "Recording folder," locate your move and drag it down into the window marked "Sequencer." (If there is no window marked "Sequencer," choose "New" from the "File" menu at the top of the screen and click "OK" in the window that appears to get one.) In the sequencer, your sound movie is now represented by two tracks: an audio track and a video track.
2. Now eliminate the unneccessary video track. From the "Sequence" menu, choose "Remove Track" and then "Track 1 [Video track]." When the computer asks you, "Are you sure?" click on "OK".
3. The video track is gone and we now want to save your sound as a stand-alone movie. From the "File" menu, choose "Save as movie" From the pop-up menu labeled "Format," choose "Self-contained movie." Make sure to give your sound movie a name that is descriptive to you, so you'll remember it later, and make sure to place it in your user folder when you save.
Make sure that the equipment is properly plugged in. If you're using the microphone, it needs to be plugged into the microphone jack in the back of the computer tower. Similarly, if you're recording from the VCR or laserdisc, the red and white cables from the VCR or laserdisc player need to be plugged into the red and white jacks marked "In" on the back of the computer tower.
When you're done with your recording session, please either save any "untitled movie" files into your user folder or delete them from the recording folder. To do this:
1. From the Apple Menu, choose Control Panels, then choose the "Sharing Setup" control panel.
2. The window that appears should contain two or three sections. The second one should be labelled "File Sharing." Click on the button labelled "Start" to turn file sharing on.
3. Close the "Sharing Setup" window.
4. From the Apple Menu, choose Control Panels, then choose the "Memory" control panel.
5. The window that appears should contain four sections. The third one should be labelled "Virtual Memory." Click on the button labelled "On" to turn virtual memory on.
6. Close the "Memory" window.
7. From the "Special" menu, choose "Restart."
