This documentation contains basic instructions for taking still pictures with the Connectix Color QuickCam. For more detailed information, refer to the QuickCam users manual or CD-ROM, both of which are located in the FDS.
Start up QuickCam...
Double-click on the application titled "QuickPict". This will open three windows, titled: QuickPict, Viewer, and Film Roll. The QuickPict window shows the current image in the camera's view. The Viewer window allows the user to view an image before saving it to disk. The Film Roll window displays thumbnails of the images the user has chosen to save to the Film Roll file, which can contain a maximum of 36 separate images.
Choose a destination for the image. This is done by clicking on the button in the lower-left corner of the QuickPict window. The floppy disk image specifies that the image will be saved to the hard or floppy drive. The clipboard image specifies that the image will be temporarily stored in the Viewer frame. The film roll image specifies that the image will be saved to the film roll location, a file where a series of images may be stored before having to be given a permanent location on a disk drive.
Adjust the camera so that the desired image appears in the QuickPict window. To achieve this, the camera may be lifted from its base, so long as it is eventually returned.
Click the "Take Picture" button in the QuickPict window. Depending on which image destination is currently selected, the program will respond in various ways. If the clipboard is selected, the image will immediately appear in the Viewer window. If the film roll is selected, the image will appear in the Film Roll window. If the floppy disk is selected, the program will open a Save As window. This requires that the desired image name and save location be specified. The saving format must also be selected at this time. The three choices are PICT, JPEG, and TIFF, with PICT being the default format. PICT should be selected if the image will be used solely on Macintoshes. TIFF should be selected if the image will be sent to a PC-user. JPEG format should be selected if the image is to be used on the World Wide Web.
The captured image may now be viewed in the Viewer window. Regardless of where the image was saved, it will always appear in the Viewer as well. However, each time the Take Picture button is pressed, the new image replaces the older one. If the desired image has been achieved, it must be saved to disk if it has not been previously. To save from the Viewer, select the Viewer window with the cursor, and select "Save As" from the "File" menu. Then select a format and name for the image in addition to a saving location. Then click "Save". This same process is used for saving from the Film Roll, but in that case the individual image must be highlighted before saving. The image is highlighted when it has a red border. It can then be saved following the above steps.
If further images are desired, repeat steps 3-6. Upon completion of
image-gathering, be sure to delete all extraneous images from the Film
Roll file. This is done by selecting the Film Roll and clicking on the
Trash button in the lower left corner of the window. If certain images
need to be saved in the film roll, delete all others by highlighting them
individually and pressing the Delete key. Deleting is permanent, so be
sure to save all desired images. When this is accomplished, select "Quit"
from the "File" menu.
These basic instructions do not cover many areas of the QuickPict
program. For more detailed instruction, consult the users manual or contact
one of the Student Technical Support Specialists or the Assistant Director.
