Conference
Traffic and Diaspora: Political,
Economic, and Cultural
Exchanges between Japan and Asian America
February 25th &
February 26th, 2005
Conference Location: The Inn at Middletown and
Wesleyan University
This conference is
a part of Wesleyan’s Freeman Asian/Asian American Initiative, which
is intended to further develop institutional resources and
curriculum in this exciting field. The conference will bring
together scholars from the social sciences and humanities to explore
the forces—cultural, political, and social— that have characterized
the movement of communities, commodities and ideologies across the
Pacific, and which offer an important challenge to static
definitions of nation-state, culture, and community. Using Japan,
Japanese diasporas and Japanese American culture to center our
inquiry, the conference responds to
questions that will also be crucial to an increasingly global
twenty-first century: our inquiry will explore the links between
race and nation; transnational (im)mobility; and the significance of
locality (and community) to political, economic, and cultural motion
across oceans, borders and nation-states. Additionally, we will
explore how those of us in Asian American Studies, American Studies,
and Asian Studies might establish new methodologies and connections
between fields to examine emerging and existing communities of
Japanese in the Americas, and their interactions with other
communities of color.
