AASEI is a U.S. non-profit organization that supports international environmental initiatives in Russian Nature Reserves (Zapovedniki). In cooperation with Russian and foreign scientists, students, and universities, AASEI organizes scientific research projects, academic internships, work camps, environmental exchanges, and eco-tourism. Our aim is to provide practical support to Russian Nature Reserves, expand opportunities for international scientific research, and promote international understanding of these unique protected areas.

AASEI and our Russian partner ADONIS have extensive contacts with the Russian Ministry of Environmental Protection, the Russian Socio-Ecological Union (SEU), a large network of Russian Reserves and a variety of organizations that collaborate with the Reserves.

Since 1989, we have participated in several environmental activities including two summer 1989 research projects in the Olyokminsky Reserve in Eastern Siberia (Yakutia) and in the Far East Sea Reserve (near Vladivostok). Subsequent environmental exchanges took place in the Pacific Northwest and on the East Coast of the U.S. in 1991 and 1992.

Our Partner

The founding of AASEI is the result of close collaboration of its board members with Adonis.

ADONIS (Center for the Support of Ecological Initiatives), is the legally established Russian non-profit affiliate of AASEI founded by Alexander Karpenko in April 1994. Jointly with AASEI and other NGOs, ADONIS carries out projects that assist Russian Reserves in fulfilling their protective, scientific, and educational mandates.

Adonis is also a member of the Socio-Ecological Union, the largest representative of environmental NGOs in Russia. Adonis' goal is to carry out projects jointly with AASEI and other organizations which assist Russian Reserves in fulfilling their protective, scientific, and educational mandates. In so doing, Adonis seeks to enlist public and private support for the reserves, and to expand contacts with other NGOs.
