Nizhnesvirsky State Nature Reserve was founded in 1980 for the preservation and research of natural ecosystems on the southeast coast of Lake Ladoga. One of the main objectives of the reserve is to preserve mass stands of migrating birds.

The reserve is situated in the northeastern part of the Leningrad Region, Lodeyone Pole district. The preserved territory is located between Karelia, the Svir River in its lower flow and Lake Ladoga. Total area of the Reserve is 41.6 thousand hectares. The aquatic surface of Ladoga Lake covers as much as 5 thousand hectares thereof.

The relief in this locality is flat. Near Lake Ladoga there are about 20 low sandy ridges stretching along the coastline. The relief has resulted from deglaciation and subsequent transgression of Lake Ladoga. Wetlands occupy nearly 50 per cent of the area, while taiga forests cover the rest.

In the Reserve there are three biological stations (Gumbaritsy, Kovkenitsy, Lakhta) used for field research. Each year scientists from the Reserve, University of St. Petersburg, Botanical Insitute (St. Petersburg), Germany and Finland study the kingdom of plants and animals and migration of birds. Yearly about 20 thousand birds are trapped in the Gumbaritsy Ornithological Station for ringing.

The distance between the Reserve and St. Petersburg or Moscow is 240 km and 900 km, respectively. There are bus and railway connections between the Reserve and St. Petersburg. From Moscow one can reach the reserve by train or car through Lodeynoe Pole.
