Tenured, Tenure-Track and
Adjunct Positions
The Department of Religion at Wesleyan University invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies, to begin in the fall of 2009. Candidates will be expected to have Ph.D. in hand, or be very close to completion, by the time of appointment. The department seeks candidates with comprehensive training in Jewish studies and Jewish religious traditions who can teach broadly within and beyond their area of specialization. Qualified candidates must have proficiency in the Hebrew language and in a wide range of the Jewish intertextual tradition, including the Hebrew Bible. The department is flexible with regard to a candidate’s disciplinary orientation, but will favor those whose work is informed by and in conversation with current theoretical trends in the humanities and social sciences. Candidates specializing in Sephardic, Arab, or North African Jewish traditions and communities are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to carry out a significant program of research and publication, to teach the Hebrew Bible on a regular basis, the department’s Introduction to the Study of Religion and Majors Colloquium on Method and Theory on a rotating basis, and to contribute to the interdepartmental Certificate Program in Jewish and Israel Studies. Applications should include a curriculum vitae, at least three letters of recommendation, and written samples of scholarship. Applications received by October 17, 2008, will be given full consideration; preliminary interviews will be conducted at the annual meetings of the American Academy of Religion in November. Applications should be sent to Professor Ron Cameron, Chair, Search Committee, Department of Religion, 171 Church Street, Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT 06459. Wesleyan University is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer. Women and minority candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
