Wesleyan University participates in a cooperative program for residential
student exchange with the following colleges:
- Amherst
- Bowdoin
- Connecticut
- Dartmouth
- Mount Holyoke
- Smith
- Trinity
- Vassar
- Wellesley
- Wheaton
- Williams
Programs associated with the Twelve College Exchange are the National Theater
Institute in Waterford, Connecticut, sponsored by Connecticut College and the
Williams-Mystic Seaport Program in
American Maritime Studies in Mystic, Connecticut, sponsored by Williams College.
The Exchange is open to a limited number of students and gives preference to
members of the junior class. Students are not eligible to participate in their
first year. Some host institutions exclude participation of sophomores as well.
A Wesleyan student participating in the exchange program is expected to abide by
the rules and regulations of the host institution. Normally, students
participating in the program may not transfer to the host institution at the end
of their stay.
Catalogs of the participating colleges are available in the Dean's Office.
Students interested in the program should be aware of the following deadlines
and procedures when applying:
Leaving on the Exchange Program
Application Deadlines
February 1 - deadline for applying for either or both semesters of the
subsequent academic year,. However, applications will be considered as long as
space is available at the desired institution.
Application Procedure
- A full-time undergraduate Wesleyan student who is in good academic
standing may apply to one of the member colleges of the Exchange program by
completing the required application forms.
- A student may apply to only one school at a time, but may apply to a
second school if rejected by the first.
- The application form to the Exchange school must be completed and copied
(one form is retained at Wesleyan, the other is mailed to the host school).
- Completed forms should be submitted to the Dean's Office, North College.
Please do not mail them to the Exchange school.
Course Selection
Students admitted to the Twelve College Exchange Program are asked to review
their proposed plan of study with their faculty adviser before leaving Wesleyan.
It is expected that students will select courses appropriate to their program or
major and enroll in a full-time course load at the host institution. Any
problems involving enrollment and course selection should be communicated
immediately to the student's major or program adviser and to the Dean's Office
at Wesleyan.
Credit Transferral
Students participating in the Exchange do not need to apply to transfer
credit from the host school. Participation in the Twelve College Exchange
Program is considered to be equivalent to non-residence study at Wesleyan but
courses are coded for general education equivelancy. The
grades and the credits earned at the host school will be posted automatically to
the student's Wesleyan transcript. The grade earned, including any plus (+) or
minus (-) distinctions, will appear on the Wesleyan transcript.
Financial Aid
Financial aid students may apply their Wesleyan assistance, with the
exception of workstudy, toward expenses at the host college. Workstudy funds may
be replaced with additional loan funds. Students should consult Wesleyan's
Financial Aid Office about all alternate arrangements before leaving on the
Exchange program, as it is the student's responsibility to complete any loan
negotiations before leaving the Wesleyan campus.
Good Standing
All applicants to the Twelve College Exchange Program are expected to be in
good academic standing. Students who, after their acceptance into the program,
fail to remain in good standing may have their admission cancelled.
While on Exchange at another institution, a Wesleyan student is expected to
meet the academic standards and abide by the regulations of the host college.
Housing
Students admitted to the Twelve College Exchange Program will receive
information about housing arrangements directly from the host college prior to
enrollment. Exchange students are expected to reside on the campus of the host
school and abide by the school's housing regulations.
Registration
Students admitted to the Twelve College Exchange Program will receive
information about registration deadlines and procedures directly from the host
college. Wesleyan students on the Exchange are expected to enroll in a full-time
program which is appropriate to their proposed plan of study or major.
Ampersand Courses
Although they may call them by a different name, most schools offer the
equivalent of Wesleyan's "ampersand," multiple-term courses. If you are on
Exchange for only one semester, be careful to check that you are not enrolling
in a multiple-term course.
Tuition Payment and Fees
All tuition and fees are paid directly to the host college; no fees are paid
to Wesleyan University. A non-refundable Twelve College Exchange fee is payable
to the host school upon admission to the program. Details concerning tuition and
fee amounts will be provided by the host institution following admission to the
program.
Returning to Wesleyan
Deadlines to Remember
Students participating in the Twelve College Exchange Program are expected to
remain familiar with Wesleyan's calendar of procedures and deadlines when
planning their return to Wesleyan. The University Calendar should be retained as
a reminder of important events.
Financial Aid
Since financial aid is transferable to any of the eleven other member
colleges of the Exchange program, students returning to Wesleyan following
either one or two semesters of the program should be in contact with Wesleyan's
Financial Aid Office for information concerning application procedures and
deadlines for the semester in which they plan to return.
Work study students should inform the Financial Aid Office of their intention
to resume work study benefits.
Grades
All grades earned while on Exchange, including grades with plus (+) or minus
(-) distinctions, will be recorded on the official academic record at Wesleyan.
The grades will also be incorporated into the Wesleyan cumulative average and
credit calculation. The host college will mail the Exchange student's transcript
directly to the Dean's Office at Wesleyan. Following receipt of the transcript,
a student returning from the Exchange program will be asked to sign a Transcript
Verification Form to acknowledge the accuracy and completeness of the Exchange
transcript. Once the Transcript Verification Form has been signed, the grades
will be posted to the student's permanent record.
Housing
A student returning from Exchange will be assigned a room by the Office of
Residential Life, unless the student has made arrangements, in writing, for in
absentia participation in the housing lottery through designation of a proxy.
Room keys are available to students returning from Exchange on the first day
of In-Semester Registration.
In-Semester Registration
Students returning to Wesleyan from the Twelve College Exchange Program
participate in In-Semester registration at the beginning of the semester. They
may not preregister during the prior term.
An up-to-date Course Book and University Calendar will be mailed to students
on Exchange prior to their return.
Tuition and Fees
Students on the Exchange program are expected to verify their intention to
return by mailing their tuition deposit to the Office of Student Accounts.
Detailed information concerning tuition and fees can be obtained by
contacting the Office of Student Accounts directly.
