The Fries Center for Global Studies' International Relations (IR) Certificate reflects the center's emphasis on intercultural communication, experience and knowledge and the value placed on adaptability, compassion and cultural self-awareness. These qualities and practices put the program at the forefront of global education and are the hallmark of responsible global citizenship.

What You'll Study

  • The five-course IR certificate is comprised of foreign language proficiency; introductory courses in international politics, economics and the history of the contemporary international system; and advanced courses in global systems and area studies.
  • IR Certificate students are urged to study abroad, preferably in a non-English-speaking country, in order to improve language skills. Internships in foreign-policy fields (with international organizations, government agencies, multinational corporations, or nonprofit organizations) are encouraged.
