02:00 pmEconomie DanceIn this session, we will talk about the role of dance in activism. We will go over the history of dance and talk about dances that were used for the purpose of activism for gender equality and racial equality. In the second half of the session, we will run a movement experiment to introduce the theory of the power of moving human bodies and the potential use of dance as a new form of activism.

02:00 pmSHOFCOShining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO), a nonprofit organization co-founded by Jessica Posner Odede '09 and Kennedy Odede '12, combats gender inequality and extreme poverty in the Kibera slum of Nairobi, Kenya, by linking tuition free schools for girls to accessible social services for all. Come hear their story, and learn more about SHOFCO's projects, including the Kibera School for Girls and the Johanna Justin-Jinich Community Clinic, from members of SHOFCO. We'll discuss what SHOFCO-Wesleyan does here on campus, plans for the future of SHOFCO, and how you can get involved at Wes.

04:00 pmThe Rick Nicita Gallery ExhibitLed by director Benh Zeitlan '04 and producers Michael Gottwald '06 and Dan Janvey '06, a devoted team, including thirty-three Wesleyan alumni, embarked on the filming of "BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD" in Terrebonne Parrish, Louisiana during the spring and summer of 2010. The film is the story of Hushpuppy, a fierce six-year old girl living with her father in the Bathtub, a hardscrabble yet exuberant fictional community on the tip of an eroding bayou in southern Louisiana. The film has garnered much critical acclaim, including the Camera d'Or Award at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, the Grand Jury Prize for Dramatic Film at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and most recently, four Oscar nominations (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay). The Wesleyan Cinema Archives is proud to present behind-the-scenes material, promotional stills, posters and live interviews in this exhibit.
