Judith Joy Ross: Photographs
Judith Joy Ross once described the effect of her photographs as an "emotional journey". Using a large format, 8x10-inch view camera, she creates luminous portraits of ordinary people. The humanity of her subjects, their trust in the artist, their vulnerability and their strength shine through these images.

EXHIBITION: China Balancing the Changes: Photographs by Sharon Crain
Sharon Crain's photographs of China present a personal view of the changes she has seen since her first visit in 1977. Her respect for Chinese people and her desire to learn and, if possible to help, led her to develop a deep sympathy and understanding for local culture which comes through in these images. The exhibition is part of the Center for East Asian Studies' commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the U. S. and China.

Alvin Lucier: Glacier for Solo Cello
Lucy Strother '11, Cellist
During the course of a half-hour performance of Alvin Lucier's Glacier, a cellist slowly sweeps downward, tracking a graph of the mean mass balance of 30 glaciers over a 24-year period, from 1980 to 2004. Glacier was commissioned by Feet to the Fire, Exploring Global Climate Changes from Science to Art and was written for Lucy Strother '11.

Spring Faculty Dance Concert: Goddess, Siren, Monster and Liquid Shakti
Patricia Beaman and Hari Krishnan, two Artists-in-Residence at Wesleyan University, have long shared a mutual fascination with the similarities between their respective forms, Baroque dance and Bharata Natyam. In both, the compositional principles are found in antique texts, the narratives of the dances are rooted in mythology, and the formulaic structures are inextricably linked to music. In Goddess, Siren, Monster, and Liquid Shakti, they have collaborated on a suite of solo dances featuring iconic female figures from Greco-Roman and Hindu mythology. Juxtaposing the traditional forms and mythological subject matter of Baroque dance (Beaman) and Bharata Natyam (Krishnan) with modern movement and contemporary issues, they propel the classic stories of Venus, Armide, Scylla, and Ganga into the present. Costumes by Leslie Weinberg and lighting by John Carr, both of Wesleyan University, in addition to an international collaborative team from the US and Canada.
Liquid Shakti has been commissioned by Wesleyan Universitys Feet to the Fire, Wesleyan's campaign to explore global climate change.

Rage
In ancient times it was believed that the universe was forged out of a chaotic and violent clash among angry gods. "Rage" is an original, student-run production based on the Enuma Elish, a Babylonian creation myth. The dark and dramatic tale is retold through experimental puppetry, live original music and dance.

2009 Annie Sonnenblick Lecture: Edward P. Jones
One of the nation's most distinguished contemporary fiction writers, Edward P. Jones won the Pulitzer Prize for his novel, The Known World, an epic story examining the complexities of slavery. He is the author of two award-winning and bestselling story collections, and in 2005 Wesleyan awarded him an honorary degree.

In the Limelight: The Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler
V-Day Middletown 2009 presents a V-Day Benefit Production of The Vagina Monologues. Hot on the heels of ten years of success in raising over $60 million for local beneficiaries working to end violence against women and girls, Middletown has joined this global movement as part of the V-Day 2009 Campaign. Join us for this "funny" and "poignant" performance (The New York Times) to help us change the story of women! Green Street is proud to sponsor this special In the Limelight event, produced by The Women and Families Center of Meriden.
