Supplemental Materials

Label all submissions with your full name and wesID (Wesleyan ID Number) -- DO NOT SEND YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER -- and the application program you plan to apply in (Early Decision I, Early Decision II, Regular, Transfer).

Although not required, some students supplement their application with work -- such as art, music, or scientific research -- that represents a special accomplishment or interest, or reflects an educational goal.  Please submit by the application program deadlines [EDI - November 15, ED II and Regular Decision - January 1, Transfer Admission - March 15].

*Materials received after these deadlines WILL NOT be reviewed.

ALL submissions should be sent to:          Wesleyan University
                                                        Stewart M. Reid House
                                                        Office of Admission
                                                        70 Wyllys Avenue
                                                        Middletown, CT 06459-0265

 * SUBMISSIONS WILL NOT BE RETURNED

NOTE: The Freeman Asian Scholarship applicants should use the addendum (supplemental material).

Dance:

Both DVD and VHS formats are accepted.

Please do not submit CD-Roms.

Be sure to include a DETAILED DESCRIPTION of the submission:

      -     Performance or choreography
-         Dance genre

It should be clear how you are involved/what role you play in any submission.

*Please indicate "Dance" on your submission.

Film:

If you choose to supplement your application with examples of your work in film, video, or animation, please adhere to the following guidelines:

  • You may submit no more than ten minutes of footage on DVD.
  • Do not submit anything you wish returned.
  • Label the tape with your name, the name of the project, date of completion, shooting format (16mm, digital video, etc.), and the role(s) you played in the production (director, editor, etc.).
  • Submit only original creative work that you completed as part of a film class or on your own outside of class. Please do not send acting tapes or video assignments you completed for a non-film class in lieu of writing a paper; these tapes will not be reviewed.

Please consider your decision to submit supplemental material carefully. Failure to submit a tape of your work will not harm your chances of admission to Wesleyan; submitting rushed or poor quality work will do you little good. Remember, while your application materials affect your chances of being accepted to Wesleyan, they have no effect on your eventual acceptance into the Film Studies major. Only submit supplemental film or video material if you believe it represents a special accomplishment and demonstrates your unique ability to contribute to the Wesleyan community.

*Please indicate "Film" on your submission.

Audio CDs of brief musical performances are preferred.

Music submissions are recommended only for candidates with demonstrated musical talent.

Please indicate whether music is “vocal”, “classical”, or “jazz/other”.

Theater:

The Wesleyan Theater Department offers a multi-disciplinary major with courses in performance, design, history, as well as literature and criticism. We welcome supplemental materials demonstrating proficiency and skill in aspects of the discipline.  Please keep in mind that supplementary materials are optional and will be used in evaluating your application to Wesleyan, not to the Theater Department.  A specific major is usually not declared until the end of the sophomore year and these materials have no bearing on that process.

Please use the following guidelines when sending materials:

Acting - A three-minute performance sample in DVD format. (no VHS Tapes) The sample should be created for this submission and not a recording of a previous public performance.  Two short monologues of your choice should be filmed in front of a dark curtain or drop and be well lit.  In your introduction please state your name and the plays from which your selections have been taken.  Please be sure the DVD is readable on an Apple computer as well as standard DVD player.

Design/Technical Production - A sample portfolio on DVD/CD (do not send a paper portfolio) Please indicate in writing the focus of the portfolio, that is, lighting, costume, set design, or technical production. The submission of no more than twelve images must be in the jpeg (.jpg) file format on clearly labeled CD or DVD - include a caption for each image indicating your  role in relation to the image (researcher, designer, builder). The title of each jpeg should be your last name and a number separated by an underscore i.e. Jones_12.jpg.

Playwriting/Dramaturgy - A short (under five pages) writing sample, either a critical essay or an original piece of writing for the theater.

All applicants are invited to send a brief resume listing their theatrical experience outside of high school activities.

  • The title of each jpeg should be your last name and a number separated by an underscore i.e. Jones_12.jpg.

  • Submit at least ten, but no more than 20 images.  Attach either a printed list indicating the medium of each work or a list in Word format.

  • We will try our best to open these images but if they do not open we will not be responsible for notifying you or reformatting them, so you may wish to try them on a platform other than your own.
