ALEX LOUGH
|
HOMETOWN:
|
Bloomfield Hills, MI |
HIGH SCHOOL:
|
Andover High School (MI) |
MAJOR:
|
Music: Ethnomusicology/Composition
|
STUDY ABROAD:
|
Cork, Ireland |
THESIS:
|
My thesis is paper- and performance-based. I’ll be exploring the comparative
importance of solfege systems in North Indian music and American Shaped Note
singing.
|
ACTIVITIES:
|
I played varsity lacrosse my freshman year, but after
my time abroad in Ireland, I returned with a new found love for music. Since
then, I have become heavily involved in Wesleyan’s music scene. From dancing in our World Music Hall to the
Gamelan to conducting the orchestra with Professor Gil-Ordóñez in Crowell Concert Hall, I’ve learned a lot from the resources available through the Center for
the Arts. I am a Sacred Harp singer and play in a number of bands around
campus. In addition, I am a member of the Psi Upsilon Fraternity.
|
OUTSIDE WESLEYAN:
|
Traveling is one of my favorite things to do. I plan on visiting Turkey, India,
Australia and Scotland after graduation.
I love experiencing the local music, food,
dance and culture in each country. |
FAVORITE WESLEYAN EXPERIENCE:
|
After being abroad for a year, it was great to come
back and see all of my friends again. Catching up with them and getting back
into the swing of things at Wes made me appreciate all I had missed even more. |
AFTER WESLEYAN:
|
I plan to pursue a master's degree in
ethnomusicology followed by a PhD program. After spending some time traveling, I would love to be a professor of
music.
