HOMETOWN:
Singapore |
HIGH SCHOOL:
Raffles Junior College |
MAJOR:
East Asian Studies and History
STUDY ABROAD:
China and Singapore |
THESIS:
In writing a ”biography“ of Singaporean Chinese orchestra conductor Tay Teow Kiat, I will examine sociocultural developments affecting the Chinese community in Singapore and explore wider issues in history, culture, and identity in the context of the Chinese diaspora.
ACTIVITIES:
I play in the Chinese Music Ensemble and work at the vegan station at Usdan Marketplace. I previously worked for Residential Life as House Manager of Asian/Asian American House, chaired the Freeman Asian Scholars Association and tutored in the Writing Programs. I also served as a Teaching Apprentice for Japanese, and staffed various events at the Center for the Arts.
OUTSIDE WESLEYAN:
My interests in pedagogy and education policy
have led to many teaching opportunities in a variety of educational settings in
Singapore. I’ve also participated in policy discussions with Singapore’s
Ministry of Education. Food and Chinese music are my other reigning passions. |
FAVORITE WESLEYAN EXPERIENCE:
I enjoy my weekly shift at Usdan. In just
three hours, I manage to have wonderfully meaningful conversations with my
coworkers and managers, and trade cooking ideas and recipes with the chefs. I also get to watch people’s faces light up when I dole out their weekly serving of
Apple Crisp! |
AFTER WESLEYAN:
I will return to Singapore to become a History and English teacher. I hope to contribute to education
policies in Singapore and work to further develop the intersections between
education and the arts.
