COLIN
RUSSELL

HOMETOWN:
Alameda, CA
HIGH SCHOOL:
Head-Royce School
MAJOR:
Neuroscience and Behavior
FAVORITE CLASS:

I have had many phenomenal classes, so choosing one favorite is a challenge. One that I’ve particularly enjoyed was Medicine and Health in Antiquity taught by Professor Lauren Caldwell. This class brought together my love for classical Greece and the field of medicine. We explored the early roots of medical philosophy and practice in a way that showed how ancient history planted the seeds for many modern approaches and methods.

CAMPUS
ACTIVITIES:

For my first two years, I rowed on the men’s varsity crew team, competing at regattas throughout New England. I sing with two a cappella groups: coed group Notably Sharp and the Wesleyan Spirits, Wesleyan’s oldest all-male a cappella group. I have also danced with two student run dance groups. At the beginning of my junior year, I became a teacher’s assistant for the organic chemistry lab course and began as a research assistant in Professor John Kirn’s lab, studying neurogenesis in the avian song pathway.

FAVORITE WESLEYAN EXPERIENCE:

Out of the long list of amazing Wesleyan experiences, traveling with my a cappella group, the Spirits, on our annual spring break trip to Atlanta and New Orleans has definitely been one of the highlights. We met and sang with alumni, gorged on the Southern cuisine, and created fond memories that I will never forget.

OUTSIDE WESLEYAN:

I have interned for two summers at Theraclone Sciences, a biotech company in Seattle, WA. I analyzed market data to support fundraising and a Federal grant proposal, and ran experiments in the oncology department. For summer 2014, I will work at Kaiser Permanente’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Oakland, CA, while studying for the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test).

AFTER WESLEYAN:

This fall, I will be applying to medical school in pursuit of
becoming a practicing physician. Before med school, I plan on taking a gap year to travel and gain more clinical work experience.
