MARY
CHALINO

HOMETOWN:
Worcester, MA
HIGH SCHOOL:
Doherty Memorial High School
MAJOR:
Biology and Neuroscience and Behavior double major
STUDY ABROAD:
Prague, Czech Republic
FAVORITE CLASS:

Democracy and Dictatorship allowed me to study Syria from an economic and political lens. I learned an incredible amount about the Syrian Civil war, which I valued immensely since I still have strong family connections in Syria.

CAMPUS
ACTIVITIES:

One of the first communities I joined was the men’s rowing team as a coxswain. I am now a tutor for elementary students from the Middletown area, a contributing writer to the Wesleyan Argus, our campus newspaper, and a teacher’s assistant for the organic chemistry Lab. It has also been fun to model for the WesFest Fashion show each year!

FAVORITE WESLEYAN EXPERIENCE:

One of the things I enjoy the most is giving campus tours. It’s always exciting to connect with prospective students by sharing my stories and experiences at eight different spots around campus. It gives me an opportunity to meet people from across the nation and hear their stories.

OUTSIDE WESLEYAN:

I’ve interned with a gynecological oncologist at Massachusetts General Hospital to co-author a chapter called ‘The Psychological Consequences of Medical Errors for Oncological Professionals’ for the first book to cover medical errors and clinical oncology. For summer 2014, I will conducting research at UMass Medical School, investigating how a new drug can possibly prevent encephalitis as a result of the Herpes Simplex Virus.

AFTER WESLEYAN:

I hope to take a gap year to gain further research experience in the field of immunology and achieve fluency in Spanish. I’d also love to travel to South America during that time. Ultimately, my goal is to attend medical school and become a primary care physician.
