WHY I CHOSE WES:

I spent my first two years of high school at a small, liberal private school in Washington, DC, which I attended for a total of 5 years.  After my sophomore year, my family relocated to Chicago and I decided to try something new and enrolled in a public magnet school with a student body 4 times as large.  I loved both schools, but the private school was lacking in diversity and the public was severely lacking in resources. Wesleyan was the perfect happy medium: a heavily diversified student body with the resources to capitalize on that diversity to work towards an inclusive, progressive, and multifaceted community.

ACADEMIC
INTERESTS:

Both of my areas of study were something I didn't have much experience in before coming to Wesleyan.  Both African-American Studies and Art at the high school level are often treated as electives rather than academic areas of study.  In an attempt to take advantage of the opportunities of a liberal arts education, I decided to focus my time at Wesleyan on studying something I didn't have available to me beforehand and a luxury that I won't have after graduating.

FAVORITE CLASS:

My favorite class at Wesleyan so far has been African-American Autobiography taught by Professor Sarah Mahurin. The syllabus' breadth was what originally caught my attention.  We read personal narratives ranging from the likes of Fredrick Douglass, to Maya Angelou, to Chris Rock.  Not only did the class catapult my decision to become an African-American Studies major, but the fact that the students provided the rigor of discussion is what I loved most, and it has proven to be true in all disciplines.
