Wesleyan's Community Dialogues on Diversity

The Office of Affirmative Action, in conjunction with interested students, the Center for Faculty Career Development, the Office of Human Resources, and the Dean's Office is coordinating the following series of programs intended to create a sustained dialogue about diversity on campus.

• Student Peer Diversity Dialogue. Students plan a series of workshops to frame conversations around race, gender, sexual orientation, class, and other issues that affect campus community. According to organizer Iris Jacob '06 (ijacob@wesleyan.edu), "students hopefully will leave the workshops, not with answers, but with knowledge and skills" to explore the issues further.
   
• Faculty Series – Race in the Classroom. The Center for Faculty Career Development is holding a series of events focusing on race in the classroom. These have included a talk on "stereotype threat" by Geoffrey Cohen, a professor of psychology at Yale University, and a roundtable discussion for faculty, librarians, and administrators on "Race in the Classroom." The center is led by Jane A. Seney Professor of Greek Andrew Szegedy-Maszak (aszegedymasz@wesleyan.edu, http://www.wesleyan.edu/cfcd/).
   
• Staff Diversity Dialogues. All staff participated in training developed by the Anti-Defamation League that assisted in developing the skills, knowledge, and awareness to combat bigotry and build an inclusive college setting.
