Academic Mentoring
Programs
Mellon Mays Undergraduate Program
The Mellon Program is a mentoring program designed
to increase the number of African Americans, Latinos, and Native Americans earning
the
Ph.D. and entering the professoriate in the
humanities, the physical sciences, mathematics, and demography. Five students are selected
each year. Students apply the summer before junior year and begin with seven weeks in the
summer, plus junior and senior year. Students are given a stipend to replace work-study
earnings. Currently, Wesleyan has nine graduates of the Mellon Program in graduate school.
The Mellon Program has been funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation since 1989.
