Majors

East Asian Studies Major: Chinese Language and Literature

  1. Courses required of all East Asian Studies majors:

    • CHIN 206/EAST 204 (Intermediate). All students are strongly urged to go beyond this minimum. New majors who place higher than the third year of language are strongly urged to undertake more advanced language work, or to study the language with which they are less familiar, depending on the particular needs of the student.

    • EAST 201: Sophomore Colloquium

    • HIST 223/EAST 223: Traditional China

    • HIST 225/EAST 225: Japan to 1800

    • One course in East Asian literature: _______________________

    • One additional East Asian Studies course: ________________________ (to be chosen in consultation with the EAST advisor)

  2. Courses required for this concentration:

    • Two additional semesters of Chinese language study at Wesleyan (or in a Wesleyan program) above the intermediate level. Students whose Chinese proficiency is already at a native or near-native level in all respects may substitute two years (four semesters) of another language for this requirement.

    • Two courses in Chinese literature (in addition to the literature course required of all EAST majors):

      • ________________________________________________

        ________________________________________________

  3. Recommended courses:

    • At least one course in a literature other than Chinese

    • Modern Chinese history

  4. Other requirements:

    • A senior project. This should use Chinese language materials to the extent that the student's preparation premits. The project may take the form of a seminar paper or project, a senior-essay tutorial, or a senior-thesis tutorial.

    • Study in China or Taiwan for at least one semester, and preferably for two semesters. See the Office of International Studies and the East Asian Studies Major brochure for detailed information. (Students whose exceptional circumstances make study abroad problematic may petition the Program faculty to have this requirement waived.)
