Call for Materials for Wesleyan’s Hewlett Diversity Archive

In the mid–1990s Wesleyan received funding from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation for a multiyear project documenting the history of the University’s commitment to and experience with racial diversity. Over several summers, students gathered materials and conducted interviews with major players in the transformation Wesleyan underwent, starting with the admission of the Vanguard Class. The archive is housed in Olin Library’s Special Collections and Archives. We would like to see this collection continue to grow. We cordially invite you to contribute photos, posters, tapes, CDs, written documents of any kind, including diaries, memoirs, meeting notes, manifestos, reports, papers written for courses–anything pertinent to the public and private history of racial and ethnic diversity at Wesleyan.

If you have materials to donate, please contact Suzy Taraba, University archivist and head of special collections (staraba@wesleyan.edu) or Krishna Winston, professor of German studies and coordinator of the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (kwinston@wesleyan.edu).

For more information on the collection and Wesleyan’s historic commitment to diversity, please visit

Para La Familia

Para la Familia returns for its third year more experienced, more organized, and more attuned to the needs of the families they serve.

This student initiative is dedicated to bridging the gaps that distance some Latino families from understanding “life at Wesleyan.” The program’s Latino Parents Weekend offers a variety of programs that enable Spanish–speaking families to engage with Wesleyan University’s students, faculty, and administrators who contribute to their children’s collegiate experience. Last year, 70 people came to campus to share in a day of Spanish programming, catered meals, and of course, Expresiones de Latinos. This year Para la Familia is extending its repertoire to include programming during Arrival Day, Homecoming Family Weekend, and WesFest. The students involved with Para la Familia hope that parents and students will continue to be enthusiastic participants in and supporters of the program. Para la Familia looks forward to increased collaboration with various administrators, faculty, staff and alumni so that it becomes a lasting component of Wesleyan’s campus life.
