SPRING 2003 NEWSLETTER VOL.3 NO.2

News from the Asian Pacific American Alumni Council (APAAC)

Contributed by Saeyun Lee '93,
Chair of the Asian Pacific American Alumni Council

Warmest greetings and Happy Lunar New Year 2003! I am thrilled to announce that Aimee Chang ’97 has volunteered to act as the APAAC representative to the Wesleyan Club of New York City. At Wesleyan, Aimee was an economics major and also devoted considerable academic time to her interest in French language and literature. She participated in the university’s study abroad program in Paris and spent a semester doing an independent study of the French economy and unemployment issues. Upon graduation, she participated in the financial analyst training program at the Bank of America in Chicago, followed by two years of work with the organization in New York City. After two more years of financial analysis with Credit Agricole Indosuez, a French bank with corporate services in the U.S., she shifted focus and moved to her current position in the finance department of the advertising firm of J. Walter Thompson.

Aimee will assist me with organizing local events such as the annual Lunar New Year celebration, events recognizing Asian Pacific American Awareness Month in April, and admission events in the fall. In addition, she will work closely with the New York City Club volunteers and other members of the Alumni of Color Network. I greatly appreciate her interest in contributing to the work of the Council! If you are interested in acting in a similar capacity in your area, please contact me at apaac@wesleyan.edu or SDL18@columbia.edu. Thank you!

I am also quite pleased to inform you about the recent successes of filmmaker
Eric Byler ’94. His most recent work, Charlotte Sometimes, a love story with an all-APA cast, has received significant attention from film critics and audiences alike. This independent film has been nominated for two 2003 Independent Spirit Awards, and received the Audience Award at the 2002 South by Southwest Film Festival, the Special Jury Award at the 2002 Florida Film Festival, and the Best Narrative Feature at the 2002 San Diego Asian Film Festival. For folks interested in more information about both the director and the film, the official Web site is www.CharlotteSometimesTheMovie.com. Eric presented screenings of both this work and his senior thesis film in February. Further information about local screenings is available on the Web site. Congratulations and good luck for the Spirit Awards!

As always, if anyone is interested in the work of the Council, please do not hesitate to contact me. Future events, including local and campus activities, and specifically events for Reunion/Commencement 2003, will be announced via the APAAC and AOC Network e-mail systems. Thank you for your interest in the APAAC!
