Join President Bennet and other staff members for a discussion about the history, meaning and challenges of diversity at Wesleyan, and what we hope to achieve as we look to the future.

The first class of Wesleyan “freshwomen” arrived in 1970. Women of color were among those early pioneers on campus and have made a mark over the past three decades as scholars and leaders. Hear the voices of three African American alumnae whose independence added a unique dimension to life at Wesleyan, and whose commitment to excellence left a legacy for future generations.

Presenters: Charisse Lillie ’74, Chair, Partner and Litigation Head, Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP; Melinda E. Weekes ’89, former  former attorney in private practice and current master’s degree candidate, Harvard Divinity School; Oyeshola Olatoye ’96, Wesleyan trustee and Director, Hamilton Rabinovitz & Alschuler.

    Moderator: Gayle Pemberton, Professor of African American studies, English, and American studies, 2001 recipient of the Binswanger Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

In the Footsteps of Marco Polo

Join renowned National Geographic photographer Michael Yamashita ’71 on a photographic journey retracing the route of 13th-century adventurer Marco Polo on his epic 24-year voyage from Venice to China and back. Michael took three years to complete his trip, culminating in an unprecedented 80-page, three-part series in National Geographic magazine, and now a 500-page book.

Presenter: Michael Yamashita ’71, veteran photographer for National Geographic magazine, specializing in Asian topics.

Network News in Wartime: When Propaganda and Professional Journalism Meet Head On
Saturday, November 1
3 p.m.

Two seasoned network professionals will present challenging and surprising ways to think about such questions as “Is jingoism good for ratings?” “If you believe there really is a difference between propaganda and professional journalism, can you describe it?” “Should rules for professional journalists be different in wartime?”, using examples from their extensive experience over many decades working for ABC News. Bring your own tough, skeptical, challenging questions to
the discussion.
