He died two months later from complications related to sickle cell disease. The award is named in honor of former Associate Dean of the College Janina Montero, who is now vice chancellor of student affairs
at UCLA.

The Shu Tokita Memorial Scholarship: Christie Kim ’04
Established by friends and relatives of Shu Tokita '84 and awarded to students of color majoring in literature, and in area studies with a focus on literature, who are in need of financial assistance. Vanguard Prize: Michael Lewis ’03 and Shana Simmons ’03
Established by black alumni in tribute to the black members of the Class of 1969, whose perseverance and pioneering leadership earned them designation as the Vanguard Class. The prize is awarded annually to a graduating senior who has achieved academic excellence and contributed significantly to maintaining Wesleyan's racial diversity.

Wesleyan Black Alumni Council Memorial Prize: Desmond Serrette ’05 and Misa Dayson ’05
Established in April 1986 by the Wesleyan Black Alumni Council (WBAC) to honor deceased alumni of African descent. The memorial honors the memory and spirit of Bruce D. Hall ’77, James “Donnie” Rochester ’74, and Dwight L. Greene ’70. In its wisdom, the Council agreed that it would be most fitting to honor the spirit of deceased alumni through a scholarship to enrich and expand the education of an African American student. The WBAC established a scholarship to provide financial support to a student of African descent who wishes to pursue a summer project related to the African American experience.
