Bill Cosby stands up for scholarships at Wesleyan University in benefit performance
New York City — Demonstrating his deep personal commitment to higher education, Bill Cosby, Ph.D. (father of Erika Cosby, Class of 1987), donated his talents to a gala benefit performance at New York City’s Pierre Hotel. More than 400 donors in attendance gave $2.5 million in support of scholarships at Wesleyan University.
Cosby spoke warmly of the efforts by Wesleyan alumni to support financial aid and said, “Mrs. Cosby and I believe that the price of education in the United States of America shouldn’t be unattainable.”
“Bill cares deeply about excellence in education, which is what Wesleyan is all about,” noted Barbara-Jan Wilson, Vice President for University Relations at Wesleyan. “We thank Bill for his support of students.”
Dr. Cosby received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Wesleyan in 1987.
A group of Wesleyan University trustees underwrote the costs of the evening’s dinner and other festivities, ensuring that 100% of the proceeds of Cosby’s performance benefited financial aid for deserving students.
The performance was a featured highlight of Wesleyan’s 175th Anniversary year celebrations.
