Context of Discovery:

Discovered at Koobi Fora, Kenya by Kamoya Kimeu in 1973. The fossil is somewhat distorted on the left side because of the pressure on the skull during the fossilization process.

Facts about "KNM-ER 1813":

This individual had a small face, small teeth and small brain, with a cranial capacity of 510 cc. This is not much larger than the average for Australopithecines. It is controversial whether H. habilis is ancestral to H. sapiens.
