Women’s rugby is a force to be reckoned with these days, a fact supported by the team’s recent win of the Beast of the East Tournament, held in Portsmouth, RI, this past weekend. The first game was on Saturday against Plymouth State, with Wes winning 8-5. Diving in, the women picked up the first score by means of junior Liz Weiner’s tri (worth five points). Plymouth reciprocated, and the score was tied. In the second half, with five minutes left, the team received a penalty kick for three points. Co-captain Anne Bernstein ’00 scored to win the game. "They were a big rival team this fall and the only team to beat us in our fall season," said Bernstein. "They’re the Division 2 national champions and we beat them in the first round." Teammate and co-captain Kiera Mulvey ’00 added, "They were the only really good team we played." Wesleyan blew away the competition in its second game of the day, an afternoon match against the University of Rhode Island. Julie Bennett ’00 scored two tris and Laurel Anderson ’01 and Weiner each scored one, Bernstein scored two conversion kicks, bringing the tally to 24-0. The semi-final game Sunday morning was yet another win, against the University of Maine this time, 15-0. Three girls scored one tri each: Anderson, Weiner, and Joan Altman ’00. The final game in the afternoon was against Connecticut College and the girls didn’t just beat the opposition, they creamed it. In an astounding 76-0 win, both Weiner and Anderson each scored a hat trick. Joi Barbieri ’00 scored two tris, and Sarah Hodd ’01, Laina Poon ’00, and Cola Snyder ’00 each scored one. Bernstein scored eight conversion kicks, worth two points each. "I just think that we played absolutely perfect rugby. Everybody had a fantastic game. We were totally on," said Mulvey, who is scrum captain. So far, the rugby team boasts a perfect record of 6-0. In the six games played, the team has scored 242 points and only had five scored against it. Although the B-side was shut out due to administrative issues, the A-side
organized two games for it on Sunday morning against other teams that had
already been eliminated. The
Women’s rugby heads out to UConn Wednesday night; the next home game is Saturday morning against Bridgewater State on Fauver Field. "We’re going to a tournament up at [the University of Vermont] at the end of the month," Bernstein added. "We won that tournament last year so we’re hoping to bring home another big trophy." Which would be in addition to the monster showpiece they just garnered.
"We got a huge trophy...It was great," Bernstein said, summing up the weekend.
