| Queerleaders were
childish, selfish, and embarrassing By CJ MacDonald At any other college football game, halftime comes with cheerleaders rallying on the field to perform an entertaining intermission show that amps the crowd and evokes team spirit. Only at Wesleyan would a group of “Queerleaders” disgustingly storm the field and perform derogatory acts in front of innocent young children, parents, grandparents, alumni, fellow students and friends. Only at Wesleyan would such acts even be allowed without discipline taken by administration. There is a time and place to voice your opinion and the “Queerleaders” not only picked a horrible time, but they went way over the line. The gay community at Wesleyan makes every attempt to let everyone (students, faculty, parents, prospective students) aware of their sexual preference. Why? I have no clue. Nobody cares! Shut the fuck up. Keep it to yourself. The fact that you went on the football field and performed such disgusting acts is beyond me. You ruined the game. It was done in front of my parents and thirteen year-old sister who flew 3200 miles across the country to have an enjoyable weekend. There are many diverse groups on campus here at Wesleyan. Only at Wesleyan can certain groups get away with taking their issues way too far. I am a proud student-athlete who has excelled in many aspects here at Wesleyan. As an athlete I felt disrespected and violated by the events of halftime over homecoming weekend. As a person I was embarrassed. I stood with my parents watching such vulgar acts go on at my college. Athletics are a very important part of a university and should be taken more seriously. The “Queerleaders” interfered with an organized athletic event and then did so in a horrifying manner. Nobody was allowed on the football field during halftime, yet everyone (Public Safety included) sat there and watched these clowns run around like a bunch of idiots. You call Wesleyan an “academic institution.” The University wants to be at the top of the academic ranks each year with schools like Williams and Amherst. Why are Williams and Amherst ranked much higher than Wesleyan every single year dating back to who knows when? Additionally, they kick our ass in every single athletic contest held year after year. Ridiculous acts such as Saturday’s “Queerleader” incident turn off top prospective students, including talented student athletes. Many individuals view sporting events at Wesleyan as somewhat of a joke due to the unfortunate acts of such groups as the Queerleaders. It was an athletic event that people were trying to enjoy and you put a damper on the entire weekend. If an athlete stormed into one of your events and started to protest it would be considered “discrimination” and a “hate crime.” Why? The “Queerleaders” feel that they can do and say whatever they please; yet if the tables are turned, students receive SJB’s and their acts are targeted as discriminatory. For instance, the annual chalkings are a complete joke. You chalk directly in front of Beta a derogatory phrase directed towards the brothers. Like any normal person would do, they erase the chalkings. Then you whine like little babies and say that it is “discrimnation” and a “hate crime.” You feel that you have your freedom of speech. Well, where the hell is our freedom of speech? Go ahead and waste your time chalking and protesting for stupid rights. Just do so in an appropriate manner. Do not disrespect other students, faculty, prospective students, my parents or me. This is not what the real world consists of. You live in a sheltered little world hiding behind administration and Public Safety. You storm the campus performing humiliating acts trying to draw attention. You may succeed so in drawing recognition to your group, but why in such an offensive way? Are you that insecure that you need to do such stupid acts? Was it necessary to have two homosexuals on top of each other performing sexual acts on the middle of the football field behind a TV interview. NO! You are a disgrace. You should be embarrassed and I feel sorry for your parents and families. Are you ever going to grow up? This has nothing to do with sexual preference. I do not at all agree with the lifestyle choice that these supposed “women” have made, but I do respect their right to make that choice. Unfortunately, the disgusting behavior of these individuals has stained just about everyone’s remembrances of homecoming weekend. I really hope that the University will hold them accountable for their conduct and will take appropriate action to prevent such occurrences in the future. MacDonald is a member of the class of 2002.
