| Winning Candidate Works
With Campus Greens By Jesse Pearlman Karlsberg While the Wesleyan Democrats and Republicans were only minimally involved in this fall’s local elections, the Campus Greens organized around several Green Party races in Connecticut, especially the Hartford City Council campaign of Elizabeth Horton Sheff. On Election Day, seven Wesleyan students and one former student worked at the Hartford polling stations and collected exit poll information. We were joined by dozens of volunteers from Hartford, the Green Party, and the Trinity and University of Hartford Campus Greens. Sheff was reelected with nearly a thousand votes more than her previous total and her victory capped a successful Election Day for the Connecticut Greens, who also won two seats to the Board of Aldermen in New Haven. The Green Party won more races nationally than in any previous odd-numbered year. Elizabeth Horton Sheff and the Wesleyan Campus Greens have worked together several times this semester. Elizabeth gave the keynote address for the Activating Peace conference held in late September where she spoke to an audience of students and peace activists from around the Northeast. She has also assisted the Wesleyan students who were arrested at the October 25th rally in Hartford. Elizabeth inquired about the incident with the city manager, met with defendants to discuss their options, and spoke at a fundraiser for the defendants’ legal costs. The Campus Greens congratulate her on her victory in Hartford and will continue to work with the Connecticut Green Party to actively support Green candidates. Karlsberg is a member of the class of 2003 and the Connecticut Organizer For the Campus Greens
