Wesleyan Film series
By Ben Simington
This weekend the Wesleyan Film Series is treating you to a wild circus in Science Center 150. On Friday night, we bring you Fellini’s 1960 international hit La Strada. Indulge in the tale of Zampono (Anthony Quinn), the brutal circus strongman who takes childlike Gelsomina under his wing. Touring the countryside, they meet with Il Motto ("The Fool"), a clown who relentlessly taunts Quinn’s power and throws the master-servant relationship between Zampono and his ingénue into question. On Saturday watch Delicatessen (1991), the feature film debut by French collaborators Marc Caro (art direction mastermind) and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (directing madman). This stunning visual masterpiece has blown audiences away with its mixture of hilariously dark situational comedy and mesmerizing surrealism. Delicatessen revolves around the arrival of former circus man Louison to a grim post-wartime apartment house where the butcher/landlord has conceived of a unique way to feed his residents. What could possibly come between a hired hand and his beloved circus monkey? Come see for yourself! If the circus does not appeal to you, or if you fear clowns (admit it, you have a problem), then come the CFA Cinema to cheer on the last prospect of artistic integrity in Hollywood with Steven Soderbergh’s The Limey. Soderbergh is being heralded as this year’s directorial triumph. With Erin Brockovich and Traffic making the AFI’s top 10 for the year 2000, Soderbergh remains prolific while maintaining his own artistic vision. 1999’s The Limey bears Soderbergh’s trademark unique, non-classical style, while slickly telling the tale of Wilson (brilliantly played by Terence Stamp), an ex-con with a vengeance. The Limey will be in the CFA Cinema on Friday and Saturday nights
Cathy: The drama critic on your paper said my Chablis-tinted hair was a sensuous halo over soft, inviting wide-set eyes and my generous mouth was a lush tunnel through which golden notes came. Johnny: I miss you Cathy. My yen for you goes up and down like a fever
