To the Wesleyan Community:

The Wesleyan Social Committee is in the midst of planning Spring Fling for May 2001. Spring Fling provides an opportunity for the Wesleyan community to stage a show featuring big name musical acts. It also provides the opportunity to show case some of Wesleyan’s own talent. Each year a Wesleyan act determined through the Battle of the Bands opens Spring Fling. The Battle of the Bands will be held this April 14 in Westco. A group of students, who are not on the Social Committee, judges the Battle of the Bands deciding the winner by a majority vote. Last year there were over 25 submissions for only 5 performance spaces in Battle of the Bands. The Social Committee encourages any student group, band, act, or performer to submit a demo tape. Since there are so many musical acts and so few spaces available for performers the selection process is highly competitive. The more time and effort that is put into a demo tape the better it sounds and the better the chance of that group getting to play in Battle of the Bands and potentially in Spring Fling. Demo tape submissions are due at the WSA building by 5pm on March 27.

Each demo tape should have 2-3 songs that adequately display the ability and sound of the group or act. Over the years several talented acts have been passed over in favor of acts with better produced demo tapes. There are a lot of demo submissions and not that much time to listen to each one. Since each member of the Social Committee is not acquainted with each group or performer the first and only impression comes across through the demo tape. It can be difficult to discern poor quality in recording and production from poor quality in performance ability. Prevent the possibility of that mistake from being made by submitting a well produced demo tape. Not everyone has the time or resources to send in a professional
quality demo tape, that should not stop any group or person from submitting what they can. All submissions will be considered equally and seriously. This is not intended to be discouraging, but rather to explain the selection process for Battle of the Bands and to encourage as many musical acts to submit the best demo tape they can.
