The Garnet Tide of Swarthmore College bit off more than it could chew this past Saturday when it took on the men’s lacrosse team at West Haven High School. The teams met in West Haven due to the field conditions in Middletown.

The Cardinals, now 4-1, following their 16-12 defeat at the hands of Eastern Connecticut State University on March 21, took their aggression out on a weak Swarthmore team, besting
them 17-6.

"We had something to prove when we stepped on the field against Swarthmore," said Quad-captain goalie Luke Cash ’01. "[Even] though they were a step below Eastern."

Quad-captain attacker John Landay ’01 led the Cardinals’ attack by netting six goals and assisting in two others. Landay currently has 222 career points, 33 behind all-time career leader
Pete Roy ’94, and the all-time career goal record with 138.

"John Landay has impressed everyone with his airtight game, both on and off the field," said middie Jeff DelRosso ’01.

According to Cash, the team came out a little sluggish against a strong Eastern Connecticut squad that is ranked 20th in the country by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse
Association. Wesleyan received votes, but is not currently ranked.

"[In the] Eastern game, we did not come with the intensity that we needed," Cash said. "We were fine in the first half but then broke down in the last 20 minutes."

Not surprisingly, Landay paced Wesleyan against Eastern, racking up five goals and two assists. Attackman Mark Ungar ’02 added two goals as well, to bring his season totals to14
goals and 19 points.

"Despite a slow week after an awesome performance in Florida, I have decided to save up my man juice in order to really stomp the opposition and rack up the points in these next few
games," Ungar said.

Ungar’s obsession with "man juice" is not unique and seems to be a common phenomenon on the team.

"Man juice also known as man power is essential to have for any athlete in order for them to reach their athletic potential," said Quad-captain middie Rob Wilcox ’01. "Many people will
try to take a lax dude’s man juice but I tell my players to be strong and keep it in reserve, although I myself do not always follow my own mantra."

Defenseman Ed Yoo ’02 shares his theory.

"After extensive studies I have concluded that ‘man juice’ is a limited resource at times, and shouldn’t be disturbed 48 hours before any activities that require the abilities of man," Yoo
said.

If the Cardinals can harness the power of their ‘man juice’, they should be able to make a serious run at the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) title and a berth in
the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championships.

"This team has a legitimate chance to make it to the national tournament," Wilcox said. "We have had some set backs, but as long as we can keep working hard and smoking these
turkeys we should do well."

To win, however, the team will have to do more than rely on the offensive prowess of Landay and Andrew Rotando ’02, the two leading scorers last year in NESCAC. Despite losing all
but one starting defensemen, this green defensive-line is looking to step it up and help contribute to a berth in a post-season tournament.

"The defense, although young, has a very positive outlook and their motto is: we want to hit them so hard their only rehab is the Bible," Wilcox said.

Up next for the Cardinals are the Navigators of Roger Williams University Thursday in Bristol, Rhode Island. Wesleyan opens its home schedule on Saturday against Bates College.

When asked about the team’s game plan for Saturday against Bates, Ungar gave a cryptic answer.

"I’ll break it down like this," Ungar said. "Basically I’m gonna light up the Bates defense during the day and the skies at night."

Cash’s response was not any clearer:

"With a bang you will know it is us."
