John
Landay ’01 scores 100th goal for men’s lacrosse
By Aaron Rutkoff
Men’s lacrosse attacker John Landay ’01 slammed his one-hundredth career goal into the back of the net against Tufts on Saturday. With 6:57 remaining in the second quarter, Landay took the ball in alone, reaching this incredible milestone on an unassisted score. "His hundredth was typical John Landay," explained tri-captain Jeremy Klatell ’00. "John is a big, powerful man, which makes him difficult for defenders to cover. He’s got a patented right handed crank for a shot, and his great field vision prevents double teams." Landay’s achievement makes him one of only three Cardinal lacrosse players to ever reach the century mark, and the first athlete in Wesleyan lacrosse history to amass 100 goals by his junior season. No stranger to record-setting success, Landay became the second lacrosse player to need only his first two seasons to reach the 100 point mark. Sources say that, barring any unforseen circumstances, Landay should break the Wes lacrosse career goal record sometime next season. "He’s a definite leader," said tri-captain Dixon Merkt ’00 of Landay’s non-athletic contributions to the Cardinal team. "John likes to organize activities when we’re not on the field. He’s good like that. He get’s younger guys on the team involved, and he checks up on them. He’s concerned." "John’s also a witty individual," added Merkt. Not content to rest on his laurels, Landay also scored goal number 101 and had three assists in Saturday’s close victory over Tufts University. The teams were locked in a 10-10 tie with 3:02 left in the match when Craig Schortzmann ’01 scored the game winner on a pass from Landay. Mark Ungar ’02 and Jeff DelRosso ’01 also scored in the waning moments of the game, making the final 13-10. Landay has played in all thirteen games this season, with 35 goals and 25 assists, for a total of 60 points. With one more regular season game still to play, Landay trails teamate Andrew Rotando ’02 for the NESCAC season scoring title. Rotando takes a three point lead into today’s home game against Endicott. The game begins at 4:30 on the field in the CFA. With Landay and company in top form, Cardinal lacrosse is now looking ahead to an exciting playoff picture. |
