Get involved with the NH primary

By John Zorabedian

I would like to use this forum, as a recent graduate, to address the Wesleyan community. Although it has been a mere few months since I left the University, I still feel a strong connection to this campus. I have, fortunately, taken the initial steps of venturing out from the protective enclosure of the academic institution.

As of a few weeks ago, I have begun working toward a personal and career goal by assisting with the Bill Bradley presidential campaign. Many of you may have already seen my fliers on campus, or noted my (failed) attempt to meet with and recruit students on campus. The New Hampshire primary, which resembles a kick-off for any candidate seeking nomination, is a mere three months away. Although the campaign is non-existent at this stage in Connecticut, and perhaps absent from the thoughts of many students, it has entered a crucial stage in New Hampshire.

Mr. Bradley, who is vying for the democratic nomination for president, and is competing with Vice President Gore for support, represents, in my view, the values and ideals expressed by many Wesleyan students. My own faith in his integrity and his progressive stance on many important issues, has compelled me to work toward Mr. Bradley’s nomination, and hopefully, his election as our next president.

Bradley has adopted a liberal platform, consisting of governmental and campaign finance reform; expanded health care for millions of uninsured children; a clean environment; racial equality; gun control and decreased military spending; accessible and quality education, among other important issues that concern Wesleyan students.

Although many of you are politically aware, and are often pro-active,

there lacks a true sense of efficacy or empowerment on this campus. Perhaps it is a result of isolation, or disillusionment with our political system. However, I would like to invite any interested students to participate in this most important of civic obligations. Wesleyan, I encourage you to engage yourself within the democratic process.

Your efforts are sorely needed to bolster Mr. Bradley’s support in New Hampshire. This weekend, November 6 and 7th, students from all over the northeast will arrive in New Hampshire to rally, canvass and celebrate a candidate who shares our vision for a better future for our nation and for ourselves. I urge you to contact me at the Concord, NH headquarters at 603-224-4222, or at johnzorabedian@ hotmail.com, or check us out on the Web at billbradley.com. Get involved, get empowered, change your world.
