Student arrested by the Middletown PD

A number of student groups have rallied together to voice concerns of police brutality following the arrest and alleged harassment of a student at a party Sunday, Oct. 8. Ray Dolphin ’01, who is African-American, was arrested by the Middletown Police Department (MPD) at an off-campus party at approximately 3 am Sunday, Oct. 8. He was charged with interfering with a police officer, which is a misdemeanor. However, several student witnesses and Dolphin claim that his arrest was racially motivated and unwarranted.

MPD Should Protect, not Harass
Exactly three years ago today, Oct. 17, 1997, the Middletown Police Department responded to reports of a Wesleyan event which was "out of control." A DJ competition attended by 50 people in a courtyard adjacent to Manhattan Bagel ended abruptly when police arrived in seven squad cars and with police dogs.

Seventeen year-old Astronomy grad enters Wes

At an age when most students were laboring over introductory algebra, Samantha Stevenson was beginning work toward her bachelor’s degree at Western Connecticut State University. While living at home in Roxbury, CT, she entered college at age 12. Earning her degree in math and astronomy at age 16, she entered Wesleyan’s graduate program this year.

The Ampersand Takes a Stand

The Argus recently ran an article in which Wesleyan University was named the seventh most politically active campus in the United States. We at the Ampersand took great pride in reading this fact, although we must also admit to have also felt a certain amount of guilt. You see, we don’t really participate in anything that might be termed a "good cause."

With win over Bates, football tied for first in NESCAC

The football team escaped Lewiston, Maine with a win against Bates College this Saturday. After being held scoreless for the first half, the Cardinals picked up the pace in the final 25 minutes to bring their record to 3-1 for the year. Wesleyan started off the game on an ominous note. On the opening play, quarterback Brennan Carney ’04 botched a pitch and Bates recovered at the Wesleyan 10-yard.
