Womens Soccer Amelia Stoj 02 scored an unassisted goal 20 minutes into the game and Ella Naef 03 made 17 saves as womens soccer snapped its five-game losing streak by blanking St. Josephs (Conn.) 1-0 Wednesday. The goal was Stojs first in 20 career games for Wesleyan (2-8). The Cardinals outshot St. Joes (4-6) 30-19. Wesleyan looks for back-to-back wins for the first time this season when Springfield College comes to Middletown Wednesday at 4 p.m. Volleyball Volleyball continued to struggle against the top teams in New England, falling to both Little Three rivals before rebounding with a victory over Bowdoin College at the New England Small College Athletic Conference Satellite Tournament held at Amherst College this weekend. The hosts knocked off the Cardinals in four games for the second time this season. The Jeffs took the first two games 15-6 and 15-2 before the Cardinals picked up a 15-12 win in the third game. Wesleyan could not build on this success however, and fell in the following game 15-3. The Cardinals didnt fare any better against Williams College in their second match of the tournament. The Ephs slammed Wesleyan in three games 15-5, 15-5, and 15-4. While Sarah Synakowski 00 had 15 kills in the match against Amherst, the Cardinals could only muster 15 as a team against the Ephs, a clear demonstration of Williamss dominance. In the final match of a disappointing tournament, Wesleyan got back on the right track, edging Bowdoin College in four games. The first two matches were close and the teams split a pair of 15-8 decisions. The Cardinals really shone in the final two games as they blew the Polar Bears away with two convincing 15-4 win. The schedule doesnt get any easier for the Cardinals. They host a rematch with Western Connecticut State University Wednesday at 7 p.m. Western took Wesleyan to the limit before the Cardinals prevailed in a five-game match. Field Hockey Field hockey split its two games this week, dropping a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Tufts University before annihilating Elms College 7-2. Tufts scored the games only goal five minutes into the second half. Despite winning the game Tufts was badly outplayed by the Cardinals. Wesleyan outshot the Jumbos 22-6 and took 22 corners to Tuftss three. The defeat marked the first home loss for the Cardinals, who had won their first six home matches. As they have after their other two losses, Wesleyan followed the loss to Tufts with a convincing win. This time the Cardinals set a season high for offense as they struck for seven goals in the win. Laura Pfeiffenberger 03 scored twice and Kristin Milone 02 added three assists for Wesleyan. The Cardinals now begin their toughest stretch of the season. They play their final home match of the regular season when they take on Trinity College Wednesday at 4:00. After Trinity the Cardinals hit the road to take on two of the best teams in New England: Amherst College (9-2) and Bowdoin College (9-1). Both teams are ranked in the top 15 nationally. |
