New Lights Along College Row

Thanks to the efforts of the Wesleyan Student Assembly (WSA) and Physical Plant, students can now feel more secure while strolling down College Row at night.

Within the next few weeks, the collaboration between the WSA and Physical Plant will result in the placement of 17 new environmentally sound lights near North College.

"We’d had a lot of feedback from students that poor lighting in the North College area was a problem," said Director of Facilities Operations Harry Kinne. "I was in the Dean of Student Services offices last year, and I worked with WSA members [on the issue]."

Members of the Student Affairs Committee (SAC), a subcommittee of the WSA, were first approached by students last spring about the need for additional lighting around North College. The SAC then approached the Administration with the idea, and the installation of the lights began in June.

According to Kinne, most of the lights are already up but have yet to be turned on. The remaining lights will be installed in the upcoming weeks.

"The lights are strategically placed," Kinne said. "They extend from near the campus center across the lawn all the way to the squash courts."

According to Zach Sandler ’01, who served on the SAC last year, the North College area was the darkest place on campus at night. Sandler and the SAC went out to the area last spring with Dean of Student Services Mike Whaley and pointed out the problem.

"A lot of students had expressed dissatisfaction with the deficiency of the lighting there— there are a lot of spots there that are very dark and quite unsafe," Sandler said.

In addition, the new lights are environmentally friendly and specially chosen to prevent light pollution. According to Kinne, the lights do not interfere with the work done at Van Vleck Observatory because they face directly down.
