The intersection of science and the body has been a recurring theme in my work. Over time, this investigation has included body extensions based on anatomy and evolution, prints exploring the ecology of parasites, and various types of machines which metaphorically reenact human behavior. Each piece in this show is both a sculptural vehicle and a simple machine. The pieces animate trowels, saws and branches into a meditative dance. Drum Machine and Saw Machine were both included in a collaborative performance piece called The Garden which was premiered in January at the Chocolate Factory, a performance venue in Queens. This work and my newest piece, Carousel, point to my own evolution as a third generation tinker. They are inspired by my father and my late grandfather, both of them builders and inventors. Both of these men at one time inhabited the house where I now live, and the found objects that are animated in these pieces all come from our house and yard, thus carrying symbolic meaning beyond their simple forms. This work also represents a renewed interest in performance, tapping into my experience with dance, theater and music. Currently I am searching for ways to bring the magic of movement to the viewer through interaction. I am interested in performing for an audience and in inviting the "audience" to interact with my work.
