GAME-BY-GAME SUMMARY OF THE 2003 SEASON

Wesleyan 11, Johnson & Wales 2 - 5/6/03 at Middletown, Conn.

Game Notes: Bill Robinson became the all-time leader for hits at Wesleyan when he stroked an RBI double off the left-field fence in the 7th inning, which turned out to be the final at-bat of his career. He had doubled and scored a run in the 6th inning for his first hit of the game, tying Mark Consorte '92 with his 167th hit. Now Robinson stands alone in first place with 168 in 132 games. He has a career batting average of .352. Wesleyan got eight solid innings of pitching from Will Gordon, who struck out 10 and allowed just two runs. Wesleyan took the lead for good in the 5th when Drew Nannini started a five-run rally with a two-run single, putting Wesleyan up 3-2. Josh Daniels added an RBI double and Jim Barletto knocked in a run with a single to support the cause.

Wesleyan 10, Suffolk 9 (11 innings) - 5/5/03 at Middletown, Conn.

Game Notes: Alexander Brooks greeted reliever Kris Stokes by lining a double over the head of the left fielder to bring in Bill Robinson with the winning run in the bottom of the 11th. Robinson had led off the inning with a single up the middle and was sacrificed to second. Robinson had tied the game in the bottom of the 9th with a leadoff home run to left, his sixth of the season and 16th of his career. With his three hits on the day, Robinson is now up to 166 in his career, one shy of the Wesleyan record. Suffolk had built up a 6-0 lead in the 3rd inning and had 11 hits into the 6th inning before Tom Bloss came into the game and shut the door, allowing just two hits and no runs over 5 2/3 innings of relief.

Eastern Connecticut 14, Wesleyan 4 - 4/30/03 at Middletown, Conn.

Game Notes: Dwight Wildman led a 19-hit attack for Eastern with three home runs and six RBI. Tom Koch also had three hits for Eastern and drove in four runs. Wesleyan ended lefty ace Ryan DiPietro's shutout bid when Jason Vitko tripled in the 7th and scored on a Drew Nannini fly to right. Bill Robinson stroked a two-run single in the 8th, bringing his career hit total to 163, four shy of the Wesleyan career mark. Eastern Conn. is ranked first in NCAA Div. III and had a 23-game win streak snapped two days earlier by Tufts.

Wesleyan 12, Hamilton 3 - 4/27/03 at Middletown, Conn.

Game Notes: Wesleyan took the lead for good in the bottom of the 5th on an error and RBI singles from Dave Vanech and Jason Vitko. The Cardinals pounded out 10 more hits over the final three innings to chase in eight additional runs to pad the lead. Wesleyan is now 13-0 all-time vs. Hamilton.

Wesleyan 5, Hamilton 0 - 4/27/03 at Middletown, Conn.

Game Notes: Wesleyan jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 1st inning with a pair of walks and consecutive RBI singles by Dave Vanech, Jason Vitko and Drew Nannini. A bobble in the outfield allowed the fourth run to score. Eric Wdowiak went the distance for his first career win. Two of the three hits he allowed came in the final inning.

Wesleyan 10, Hamilton 4 - 4/25/03 at Middletown, Conn.

Game Notes: Wesleyan broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the 5th on a walk to Bill Robinson, a ground-rule double by Dave Vanech and an RBI single to center by Jason Vitko. The Cardinals broke it open in the 7th with a six-run flurry on three walks and four hits, including a two-run homer by Alexander Brooks and a RBI double by Will Gordon.

Springfield 13, Wesleyan 9 - 4/21/03 at Springfield, Mass.

Game Notes: Wesleyan could not hold on to a 7-3 lead as Springfield rallied to take the lead for good with a seven-run outburst in the bottom of the 6th inning. Wesleyan scored four unearned runs in the 1st inning, getting three singles, including a two-RBI hit from Andrew Stuerzel after a Springfield error prolonged the frame. Bill Robinson opened up a three-run 5th inning with his fifth homer of the season and Angus Fredenburg added a sacrifice fly and Matt Johnson chipped in with an RBI single. But the Pride chased starter Will Gordon in the 6th by sending 11 men to the plate with six hits and two Wesleyan errors contributing to the seven runs, four of them unearned.

Middlebury 12, Wesleyan 9 - 4/19/03 at Middlebury, Vt.

Game Notes: As he did in the first game of the double header, Middlebury's Jake Armstrong produced the big hit during a four-run outburst in the bottom of the 7th as the Panthers broke a 7-7 deadlock. After Abe Streep drove in the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded infield single, Armstrong knocked in a pair of runs with a single, and that proved to be the difference in the game as Wesleyan cut the 11-7 deficit to 11-9 in the 8th when Dave Vanech stroked a bases-loaded single to bring in a pair of runs.

Middlebury 6, Wesleyan 4 - 4/19/03 at Middlebury, Vt.

Game Notes: Despite taking a 4-3 lead in the top of the 5th inning on a Jim Barletto triple, followed by a Jeff Maier single, a pair of walks and a wild pitch, the Cardinals could not make the lead hold up as Middlebury rallied for three runs in the bottom of the 6th. Middlebury's Jake Armstrong delivered the big blow with a two-run double to break a 4-4 tie. Bill Robinson smacked a two-run homer in the 1st inning, his fourth of the season.
