Alex Mautone '07 Collects 6 Hits, 7 RBIs in Two Games as Cards Go 1-1, Then Season Ends at Trinity
Alex Mautone '07 (#3, batting in photo) rapped out three hits, including a pair of doubles, to drive in four runs as the Cards mounted an 18-hit attack to defeat Elms Wed., May 2, 14-4. It was the first-ever meeting between the schools on the diamond. Joining Mautone on the hit parade were Drew Dominguez '09 and Rob Coughlin '07 as each went 3-for-5 on the evening with three runs scored. On the mound, Dusty Mones '09 (#10, photo insert lower right) threw five inning of shutout ball, yielding only one hit with six strikeouts to earn the win. Against Westfield St. the day before (Tues., May 1) during the Cardinals' home finale, Mautone found himself at the plate in both the 1st and 3rd innings with Brice Kelly '10 (#9, standing in photo) on third base with a triple. Each time Mautone got the job done driving Kelly in, first with a groundout, then with the first of his three singles in the contest. His 7th-inning hit also drove in a run as he finished the game with three RBI. Wesleyan tried to rally from an 8-3 deficit in the 4th inning, and got as close at 9-7 in the 7th frame vs. the MASCAC regular-season champion Owls, but Westfield St. prevailed, 12-7. The Cards ended the season in a double-header at Trinity Sat., May 5, losing both 7-1 and 15-6. Dominguez had a strong showing in the finale by going 4-for-5. Mautone led the Cardinals in hits (46), RBI (27) and batting average (.338) for the year.
