Getting six strong inning on the mound from lefty Dusty Mones '09 (main photo) and three RBI from rookie Joe Giaimo '11 (photo insert lower right), Wesleyan picked up an 11-2 victory in the final game of its three-game set at Menlo College in Calif. Mon., March 10. It was the third game in a row the Cardinals struck for at least 14 hits as the team currently sports a .355 mark. While Mones allowed only five hits and one run with six strikeouts during his time on the mound, Giaimo lashed an RBI single in the fourth and a two-run safety in the fifth to help the team build a 7-1 lead through six frames. Also joining the hit parade was Louis Gabel '08 (photo insert lower left), who is now seeing time in the outfield when not pitching. He connected for a pair of hits including his first career home run, a solo shot in the ninth. He is now 4-for-6 with five RBI this year after going three seasons without a plate appearance. Nick Gonsalves '10 was good for three hits, two runs and an RBI. The team began moving southward to the Santa Barbara area for a game at Westmont Tues., March 11. There the hit parade slowed as the Cards dropped a 10-7 decision. Graham Douds '08 blasted his second home run of the season, a two-run shot that tied the game at 4-4 in the 3rd inning. The teams entered the 8th tied at 6-6 but the home team struck for four runs on five hits for a 10-6 lead. Wesleyan loaded the bases with no outs in the 9th but managed just one run before the final out was recorded. The team settles in around Los Angeles for the final 10 games of its California excursion, playing at La Sierra in Riverside Wed., March 12.
