Cards Now 3-0 in CA Classic After Sweep of Occidental and Extra-Inning Win Over Rutgers-Camden

Cardinals galore. Gotta love the tacky watermarks.

Pulling away from host Occidental in the fifth inning with a four-run outburst for a 7-2 lead, Wesleyan went on to capture game one of its double-header Fri., March 14, 12-4, in the California Classic. Playing as the home team in game two, Wesleyan rallied from a 7-0 deficit in the first inning for a 12-11 victory. The second game belonged to Garrett Lamborn '09 (photo insert lower left) as he connected for a pair of home runs. His grand slam in the fourth inning made it a two-run game and the Cards went ahead in the sixth as Chris Simpson '08 (photo insert upper left), Graham Douds '08 and Louis Gabel '08 all drove in a run to spot Wesleyan a 12-10 lead. Lamborn also had a two-run shot in the second inning as he collected six RBI in the game. Over the two games, Joe Giaimo '11 (main photo) went 5-for-10 with two runs and an RBI, that coming on his first career home run in the first game. Brice Kelly '10 also had a round-tripper in the opener. Kit Tholen scattered 11 hits over eight innings while yielding just two earned runs to get the game-one victory on the mound. Michael Cifuentes '10 logged the victory in game two while Gabel stepped up to throw the final five outs and record a save. Wesleyan continued with another game at Occidental Sat., March 15, taking on Rutgers-Camden in a California Classic contest. Wesleyan came back from a 7-3 deficit after five innings for a 9-7 win in 10 innings. Simpson was the hero with a bases-loaded single to drive in two runs in the 10th. Earlier he had tied the game with an RBI single in the 8th. Both Douds and Drew Dominguez '09 banged out three hits in the contest while Giaimo scored three runs and made a game-saving catch against the fence in the bottom of the 9th with the score tied. Through eight of the team's 14-game west-coast swing, Wesleyan is averaging 10.5 runs a game while hitting .365. With eight home runs thus far, the Cardinals have already exceeded last year's seasonal total of seven. Wesleyan concludes Classic games at Occidental Sun., March 16 taking on Franklin & Marshall.
