Cards Even NESCAC Slate by Taking 2 of 3 from Midd with Help from Jon Sargent '09 & Joe Giaimo '11
Trailing 5-3 heading into the bottom of the 7th inning of its NESCAC West series opener with Middlebury Sat., April 5, Wesleyan erupted for seven runs to take a 10-5 lead and made it an 11-5 final. Joe Giaimo '11 (photo insert lower right) had the big hit during the rally as he sent a full-count pitch into right center for a bases-loaded triple and ended up scoring on the play as well when the ball eluded the Panther catcher. That put the Cards up 8-5 and both Derek Dettore '11 and Drew Dominguez '09 finished off the frame with an RBI double. Giaimo, who went 3-for-4 in the game, also came in to pitch out of a jam in the top of the 7th as Middlebury was moving out to its 5-3 edge. He got the final out of the inning, making him the pitcher of record when the explosion came in the next half inning. Kit Tholen '08 had the opening 6.2 IP while Michael Cifuentes '10 tossed the final two frames of shutout ball. Wesleyan and Middlebury completed the weekend series with a twin-bill on Sun., April 6 with the Panthers taking game one, 3-1, and the Cards coming back to nail down the nightcap, 2-1. Jon Sargent '09 (main photo) took the mound in relief of Eliezer Oberman '11 in the 5th inning with two outs and the bases loaded to get the final out, then threw the last four innings while allowing just two hits and no runs for the win. Brice Kelly '10 scored both Wesleyan runs in the victory, driven in by a Jeff Bizinkauskas '10 double in the 5th and a Drew Dominguez '09 single in the 3rd after Kelly tripled. In the opener, Louis Gabel '08 went the distance on the mound, yielding six hits and three unearned runs. Graham Douds '08 drove in the Wesleyan run in the 6th with a pinch-hit double. Wesleyan stands 3-3 in league play following the weekend. In between NESCAC West weekends, the Cards hosted Elms Wed., April 9, winning 8-3. Dusty Mones '09 threw three innings of shutout ball to open the game followed by six other Wesleyan hurlers with one inning each. Helping Wesleyan jump to a 6-0 lead after two innings was Chris Simpson '08, with a double and run scored in the 1st and a two-run single in the 2nd, along with Gabel, who singled in a run in the 1st and used a triple to drive home a run in the 2nd. Next up is a trip to Hamilton for an all-important NESCAC West weekend, starting with a single game Fri., April 11.
