Cardinals Make Short Work of Coast Guard in Northern and Home Opener, 16-1, to Prep for Amherst
After 12 games between Arizona and California to get the season underway, Wesleyan returned to the familiar confines of Andrus Field and did something it has done regularly over the last 16 years - defeat the Coast Guard Academy.
With Jon Sargent '09 (#34, main photo) going seven strong innings on the mound, allowing just three hits and one unearned run, Wesleyan was in complete control from the outset, batting around in both the 1st and 3rd innings to built a 10-0 lead. It was 12-0 heading into the 5th inning before Coast Guard scored its lone run, and the Cardinals added four more before it was over for a 16-1 final.
Wesleyan unleashed a 16-hit attack, 12 of those coming off the bats of Brice Kelly '10 (#7 photo insert lower left), Julian Sionnenfeld '11 (#12, photo insert upper left), Derek Dettorre '11 (#1, right side of main photo) and Garrett Lamborn '09. Kelly and Sonnenfeld each drove in a pair of runs in the 1st, the former with a two-run homer over the left-field fence and the latter with a hard-hit double down the right-field line. Sonnenfeld ended the game 4-for-6 with four RBI and two runs. Kelly added an RBI single in the 3rd for a three-RBI game. Dettorre collected three hits with a RBI and two runs scored while Lamborn went 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI.
Wesleyan last lost to Coast Guard during the 1992 season while winning all 15 games since. The next contest for the Cardinals is Friday, March 27 when Amherst comes to town for a single game. The teams will square off in a double-header in Amherst Sat., March 28 to close out the three-game NESCAC West/Little Three weekend.
