FREEMAN ADDITION OPENS MONDAY, JANUARY 3, 2005
WITH WIN FOR MEN'S BASKETBALL OVER ALBERTUS MAGNUS
Handing the basketball to the officials at the beginning
of the contest between Wesleyan's men and Albertus Magnus College Monday,
January 3, 2005, is Athletics Director John Biddiscombe. To his
right is Wesleyan head men's basketball coach Gerry McDowell and on
his left is assistant athletics director for facilities and scheduling
Richard Whitmore. Wesleyan defeated Albertus Magnus, 93-79, to
extend its current win streak to seven games. The Cardinals were led
by Tim Holland '05 with 28 points while Robert Kelly '06 chipped in with
20 points and 11 rebounds.
FREEMAN ADDITION READY
FOR OPENING MONDAY, JANUARY 3, 2005
With the first official activity for the new addition to
the Freeman Athletic Center scheduled for Monday, January 3, 2005, when
the men's basketball team hosts Albertus Magnus College at 7:30 p.m., the
$13-million project was completed in less than 14 months and will be in
full operation by the second week of January. Men's and women's
squash will kick off action in the Rosenbaum Squash Center Friday, January
14 when the women host Bowdoin at 1:30 p.m. while the men complete the
day's action with visits from M.I.T. and Navy at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.,
respectively. The 7,500-square-foot fitness center is slated to open
Friday, January 7. It will feature nearly 100 machines and a full
array of free weights along with an outstanding TV and audio entertainment
center.

The new gymnasium for basketball and
volleyball is taking shape.
This area of 7,500 square feet will be the
site of the new fitness and strength training room.
This walkway will serve as the connection from the main parking lot behind
the fire station to the entryway of the Freeman addition.
Wesleyan University broke ground for a $13 million expansion
to the Freeman Athletic Center on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003. The
addition will feature a total gross building area of 55,000 square feet and
will maximize program space by achieving a simple, functional and attractive
design. Included in the addition will be a premier Division III
gymnasium with seating for approximately 1,000, a 7,500-square-foot fitness
center and eight international squash courts. The anticipated date for
opening the facility is January 28, 2005. Placing shovels in the
ground as the first wave of dignitaries during the ground-breaking ceremony
were (L to R) Jim Dresser '63 of the Wesleyan Board of Trustees, Mayor of
Middletown Dominique Thornton, Wesleyan President Douglas Bennet and Wesleyan Vice-President for Academic
Affairs Judith Brown. Also in the photo are Wesleyan athletics
