Returning 12 letterwinners from the 6-9 squad of 2006, seven of whom were starters, combining with a bumper crop of newcomers, nine in all, the 2007 field hockey squad has reason to be optimistic. Team co-captains Adrienne Shea '08 (#2, main photo) and Tory Whitney '08 (#5, photo insert upper right) will guide the squad which opens the season by hosting talented Williams Sat., Sept. 8. Shea led the Cardinals in goals a year ago with six while Amanda Nickels '08 also returns as a five-goal scorer. Hailey Sarage '09 had three goals in 2006 as she split starting duties with Nickels. With Maddie Rottman '08 and Alexa David '10 back to roam the midfield and Whitney, Stephanie Brodsky '09 and Molly O'Connell '09 anchoring the defense, Wesleyan will have a potent lineup of field players in front of goalie Breen McDonald '10, who started seven of 15 games a year ago. She posted a 1.57 goals-against average and an .855 save percentage with a 3-3 record. As always, the NESCAC schedule looms large for the Cardinals as they look to recapture the form that brought winning conference marks in four of the last seven seasons.
