Alex Bean '11 Nets a Pair of Goals, Nearly has Game-Winning Assist but Cards Fall in OT to Colby
Alex Bean '11 (#17, photo) scored twice for Wesleyan off rebounds during the Cardinals' home opener vs. Colby Sat., Sept. 19. Her opening goal spotted Wesleyan a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute of play, while her second goal evened the count at 2-2 with 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
Seven minutes earlier in the second half, Liz Gauvey-Kern '11 made a crucial defensive save to keep the deficit just one goal heading into the final segment of the contest. In addition, keeper Tori Redding '13 picked up six saves to support the cause. But there was little she could do when Colby netted the golden goal 2:45 into the extra frame with a centering pass from deep on the right to a wide-open Mule in front.
Just about a minute and half prior, Wesleyan nearly cashed in on its own game-winning goal when Bean penetrated the left side and hit Morgan McCauley '12 with a centering pass. While it appeared for an instant that McCauley had an open net to fire into, the Colby goalie darted to the right spot and made the kick save at the final split second, keeping the game alive.
Wesleyan will be at home Wed., Sept. 23 for a meeting with Wellesley in a non-conference contest.
