A 1979 graduate of Wesleyan after playing linebacker under Bill
Macdermott and wrestling for the Cardinals over his four years,
Frank Hauser heads into his 18th year as the Cardinals' head
coach, sporting a 65-71 career mark. Joining the Wesleyan staff
in 1986 as an assistant coach, Frank, who assumed head coaching
reins in 1992, will be on the offensive side for a 14th year,
handling coordinator duties as well as QBs. He spent his his
first 10 seasons at Wesleyan (1986-1995) as the defensive
coordinator. He handled specific duties with both the secondary
and inside linebackers on defense during his initial 10 years.
Appointed to the faculty in 1987, Frank holds the rank of
adjunct professor at Wesleyan.
Before taking the position at Wesleyan, Frank, who also
holds an M.A. and sixth-year certificate in math from Wesleyan,
taught in the Middletown school district for six years along
with one year at Glastonbury. He was the head football coach at
Glastonbury High School for five seasons, guiding the Tomahawks
to the Conn. Class LL state title in 1984. Frank was named
Connecticut Coach of the Year by three organizations after that
success. In 1985, his squad again made the state finals but lost
in overtime. Frank also was an assistant basketball coach at
Middletown for seven seasons.
At Wesleyan, Frank was an assistant men's basketball
coach from 1988-92. He has consistently been active in summer
football camps, both in Connecticut and his native state of
Rhode Island, since the early 1990s.
A 1996 graduate of Middlebury College and a veteran college
assistant coach in both football and baseball for more than 10
years, Doug Mandigo joined the Wesleyan staff for the first time as
a full-time coach in 2006. He also served as an assistant baseball
coach for the Cardinals during the 2007 campaign. An assistant coach
in football, baseball and women’s ice hockey at his alma mater the
year following his graduation, Doug moved on to St. Anselm College
where he served as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach in
football during the 1997 and 1998 seasons. The 1999 and 2000
seasons found Doug serving as a graduate assistant in football at
Boston College while earning his M.Ed. degree in 2001. He returned
to Middlebury for the 2001 season, hired as an assistant professor
in physical education while serving as defensive coordinator and
secondary coach in football and assistant baseball coach through the
spring of 2004. He then moved out west and served as assistant
baseball coach at Ohlone College in 2005 and as head football coach
at Piedmont (Calif.) High School during the fall of 2005, receiving
conference coach of the year honors. As an undergraduate at
Middlebury, Doug was a rare three-sport athlete, lettering in
football, ice hockey and baseball, and served as a team captain in
the latter activity his senior year. During the 2009-10 year, Doug
will serve as interim head coach of women's ice hockey at Wesleyan
while Head Coach Jodi McKenna spends the year as an assistant coach
for the Olympic women's ice hockey squad.
Keith Hellstern-
Assistant Coach (Defensive Line & Special Teams)

Coming aboard as a full-time coach in Wesleyan's athletic department
in 2006, Keith Hellstern returned to his alma mater after an
eight-year hiatus. A 1998 Wesleyan graduate and four-time football
letterwinner, Keith was the team's starting center in 1996 and 1997.
He moved on to coach and teach at the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville,
Conn. for a year before taking his first collegiate coaching
assignment as a football assistant at Amherst College in 1999. There
for three seasons while also working toward his M.S. in sport
management at UMass which he received in 2003, Keith joined the
Columbia football staff for the 2002 campaign before becoming
director of athletics at the Dwight School in New York in 2003. Most
recently before his return to Wesleyan, Keith was fitness center
coordinator, a physical education teacher and an assistant coach in
football, wrestling and track at Poly Prep Country Day School in
Brooklyn.
A 2006 graduate of Wesleyan who also received his Master of Arts in
Liberal Studies (MALS) from Wesleyan in 2008, Shem Johnston-Bloom
was an immediate starter on the defensive line for the Cardinals as
a freshman in 2002 and handled that role for all 32 games during his
four seasons. A two-time second-team all-NESCAC pick (2004 and 2005)
and a two-year team captain, Shem will be in his fourth season as a
college assistant coach but was elevated from part-time to full-time
status in 2008. During his playing days at Wesleyan, Shem amassed
177 total tackles which included 15 sacks. He also forced two
fumbles and batted down a pass. As a senior, Shem joined the
lacrosse team for the first time as a faceoff specialist and serves
as an assistant coach in that sport at Wesleyan as well, working
with the midfielders.
Now in his 20th season at Wesleyan,
Hugh Villacis is in his 14th year with the offensive linemen
after handling the defensive line for his first six seasons. In
2002, Hugh received a national assistant coach of the year award
from AFLIAC. Earning his degree at Western Conn. State U. in
1989, where he started on the defensive line, Hugh had been an
assistant football coach at Torrington, Platt (Meriden) and
Bristol Central High Schools in Connecticut before joining the
Wesleyan staff. Hugh is employed by the Middletown school
system.
John Zinser -
Assistant Coach (Running Backs)
A 17-year veteran of Arena Football, the
first nine as a player and the last eight as an assistant coach,
John Zinser joins the Wesleyan part-time staff for the first time in
2009. A 1989 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania where he
earned Div. 1-AA Kodak All-America honors and All-Ivy recognition,
John was on the roster of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1989. He played
on both side of the ball as a lineman during his Arena Football
playing career and had numerous nominations for post-season awards.
He began coaching with the Grand Rapids Rampage in 2000 and had
stints with the New Jersey Gladiators, the Mohegan Wolves, the
Philadelphia Soul, the Las Vegas Gladiators and most recently, the
Columbus Destroyers.
A four-year member of the Wesleyan football team from 2005-08,
Anthony Marsella begins his coaching career at his alma mater as a
part-time assistant in 2009. Entering the program as a QB but moving
to the secondary as a sophomore, Anthony saw most of his action on
special teams during his career. He handled the vital role of long
snapper in both 2007 and 2008. During his Cardinal career, he made
seven tackles. Before coming to Wesleyan, Anthony was an all-state
football player at Woonsocket (R.I.) High School where he also
earned all-division baseball honors and was a state placewinner in
wrestling.
Tim Feshler-
Assistant Coach (Outside Linebackers)
Returning to Wesleyan as an assistant coach after serving in that
capacity in 2005, Tim Feshler is employed as a health and physical
education teacher in the Avon (Conn.) school system. A 1990 graduate
of Southern Connecticut who went on to receive his M.Ed. degree at
A.I.C. in 1992 and a sixth-year certificate from SCSU in 2000, Tim
has a wealth of coaching experience at both the high-school and
collegiate level. The head football coach at Xavier High (Conn.)
from 1995 to 2000 and at Avon High from 1992-93 and again from
2000-03, Tim also had stints as an assistant football coach at
Middletown (Conn.) High, Xavier High, A.I.C., Southington (Conn.)
High, Wesleyan, St. Paul's High (Conn.) and Conard High (Conn.) over
the last 22 years.
Vin Colangelo- Assistant
Coach (Tight Ends)

A football team tri-captain at Wesleyan in 2008, Vin Colangelo comes
aboard the part-time staff for the first time. A mainstay at
linebacker during his four years, Vin had 91 tackles in his career
which was unfortunately cut short due to injury after three games in
2008. His 74 stops in 2007 led the team and ranked fourth among all
NESCAC players. In addition to his all-league honors in football at
Northern Highlands Regional High School in N.J., Vin was a district
placewinner in wrestling before becoming a Cardinal. For several
summers, Vin was a counselor at a local football camp in his
hometown of Allendale, N.J.
Rico Brogna - Assistant
Coach (Wide Receivers)
Rico Brogna, who had a nine-year career in Major League Baseball
from 1992 through 2001, rejoins the Wesleyan University football
coaching staff as an assistant during the 2009 season. Rico was an
assistant football coach at Wesleyan during the 2004 season,
handling receivers. Playing with the Tigers, Mets, Phillies, Red Sox
and Braves during his nine-year major league career, Brogna moved
into high school football coaching for three years before joining
the Wesleyan staff in 2004 for his first collegiate coaching
experience. He went on to serve as head baseball coach at Post
University and most recently as head football coach at Nonnewaug
High School in Woodbury, Conn. Over the last five years, Brogna also
has been part of the Arizona Diamondbacks organization as a pro
scout.
Jeff McDonald - Assistant
Coach (Defensive Backs)
Jeff McDonald, who has served as an
assistant football coach at four Division I-AA colleges as well as
Division II Quincy University, where he earned a master's degree in
2004, comes aboard his first Division III coaching staff in 2009.
Jeff has experience at Towson St., where he was defensive
coordinator in 2008 ; Yale, where he was a defensive assistant from
2002-07 while also serving as recruiting coordinator for four
seasons ; the University of New Hampshire, where he handled the
outside linebackers in 2001 ; and Central Connecticut, where he
assisted with spring practice in 2009. A 1995 graduate of the
University of South Florida, Jeff played football and was honored
for academic excellence as a scholar-athlete for three seasons.
He began his coaching career right out of college at Ridgewood High
School in New Port Richey, Fla. for three seasons before helping out
at Quincy from 1998-2001.
